For a long time, the Epson 12000XL seems to have been preferred by artists who need large format (11″ x 17″) scanning capability. Epson has now some out with the 13000XL. I cannot discern technical differences between the two given the published specifications, and the prices seem to be the same. Does anyone know which would be best for me to scan my watercolor paintings and pen & ink drawings, and why? (I currently have a much less expensive Brother 11 x 17 all-in-one, and the color accuracy of its scans is poor and quite noticeable.)

You say the color accuracy is bad. Have you double-checked your settings? Have you calibrated the scanner? There SHOULD be a calibration procedure.

Sometimes, the software you’re scanning from can make a difference. Also to consider, is what you’re printing from (if printing) or if it’s to be on the monitor only. Some older printers still want the CMYK files, but others, and all projected images, use RGB.

Thank you for your quick reply. When I acquired the Brother device a few years ago, I went back and forth with their technical support trying to figure out why the scanner just could not accurately handle the color yellow. Although I don’t remember all the steps we took at the time, but there was ultimately no solution, and the color distortion is apparent whether the scanned file is viewed on the screen, or printed.

I have a “small” format Epson V500 photo scanner that is at least 10 years old that does an excellent job, the scans of which are satisfactory whether viewed on the screen, or printed on the Brother printer. So, I think that the Brother device can print color satisfactorily, but its color scanning function is not professional quality.

Therefore, I am interested in the Epson 12000XL and possibly the 13000XL, the former seemingly to have found some acceptance among artists.

Sounds like you did all you can. I’m sorry I don’t know the differences between the Epsons. I’d just want to make sure it will scan even if you’re out of ink.
