I bought a 5lb block from Michael’s and how do you work with it because it is hard as a rock. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it has dried out for some reason or another. No problem, just takes effort. All you have to do is get the hydration level up. If the clay is brick hard I would put it in a bowl and add some water and then kind of seal it with a plastic wrap. After awhile the clay will soak up the water. You will probably have to do some kneeding after it has soaked up some water.

Nice thing about water based clays is that you can just keep using and reusing the stuff just by adding water. If you add to much water just let it be open to the air for awhile. It will take awhile to get a feel for it, but you will get it.

Am I understanding your correctly, if I put a dried out stone hard slab of air dry clay in a bowl of water it will re-hydrate to the point I can scuplt with it?

No air dry clay will not rehydrate once it dries out completely. Only pottery clay will do that.Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you need to take it back to the shop and check to make sure the next pack is soft.

Actually clays like ‘Marblex’ can be reused by the addition of water. You will need to knead (pun unintended) the clay. What I do is when I’m sculpting and you are removing bits of clay and those dry up. I just take the pieces and add them to a plastic bowl that has water in it. Let it sit for a while and then knead. You will find that nice soft clay.

In a case of a large brick of dryed up clay. Just break it up into small pieces and put in water. After the clay has had a chance to rehydrate knead it. Very seldom do I actually want to keep that which I have sculpted. (The perfectionist in me). I just break up the sculpture and rehydrate and can use again.

Remember to use eye protection. In addition clay dust is bad for the lungs. So use a mask when breaking up clay or do any kind of activity that generates dust.

It takes awhile to develop a feel but not that long. That is the wonderful thing about air dry clays like ‘Marblex.’
