Those are good suggestions, Maureen! I need to try to tattoo those on my brain to remember them.
Is this any better? I’ve tried to highlight the grass and deepen shadows on the flowers and stems. (Grass and flowers are an area I struggle with in general… What was I doing putting them front and center!?)
I’m thinking that I could add fences and trees and other houses (some cows?) on the boring midground/background plain. However I’m not sure how much it would add to the picture as it could make it more busy and the simplicity helps the flowers stand out… and I’m at a point of ready to be done.
July 6, 2024 at 3:40 am #1555597The flowers are good …. Personally, I’d be inclined to make some blades of grass quite a bit taller, as if they, and flowers, are integrated … it would help define the distance between f/g and mid-distance.
You could add very subtle suggestions of fences, just to define a bit of character in middle ground … try it on the computer first! ( such terrain over here would be a bit like a patchwork quilt of fields defined by dry-stone walls and/or hedges!)
Cheers, Maureen

Beautiful atmosphere. I do like Maureen’s ideas about the grasses and creating a sense of place – ment for the destroyed building by the use of something like a suggestion of fencing (although I angine flimsy wooden fences are also prone to being destroyed in tornados, so you would need to consider that too)

July 12, 2024 at 4:41 pm #1556163Ok, I think I like this better now. I especially didn’t like the grass before, but now it’s not so bad. Thanks for the helpful feedback! In person the mid ground details are noticed more… Barbed wire fences, distant house and telephone poles, broken windmill (more like a blob), and haystacks.
I could have added more, but my deadline is here to submit this to our local exhibition. So it’s now varnished and ready to go.
Thank you again, everyone, for enjoying the development of this with me and for all your comments and helping me make it better.
July 13, 2024 at 3:16 am #1556196It does look better with that greater definition … I downloaded to try to get larger view so we could see the mid distance interest too! .. but the file is too small.
Good luck with the show … I bet this looks impressive on display … and I hope it helped lay a few ghosts to rest!
Cheers, Maureen

I do think it has “presence” on display and it was a helpful subject for me to paint. We’ll see how discussions on it go at the exhibition.
And I attached the file. Maybe it has a better file size to let you see details… Though they are very subtle and may not be as much as the painting really needs.

Thanks for the attachment though?
Cheers, Maureen
