‘Winter retreats’
oil on canvas, 40 x 40 cm.
The image is a bit small. This is another of the ‘Winter series’ I have been working on for the last year. The paintings are of memories of past walks on the moorlands near to my croft back in the days when I used to live in an isolated location. I now live on the edge of a village, yet I do wish I was back living in the wilds again. I miss the intense silence and the lonesome location.

Winston Churchill.January 15, 2022 at 9:17 am #1453769I like the colors and suggested detail in the fore and middle grounds: red rock, green grasses and snowy mountains. I think the sky is an effective, dramatic background. This would be so much more fun to see in person. A beautiful painting. Gary
"Painting is a verb"
January 15, 2022 at 11:07 am #1453783This is such a beautiful painting! The subdued winter colors of the foreground are perfect for letting the sky tell its story. It’s a dark and brooding sky but the presence of a little light at the top keeps it from feeling too heavy and gives a sense of hope (to me.) I think I can relate to missing these kinds of views too. I moved and now live in a tight neighborhood like one sardine among many in the tin. I miss my old sky views and the feeling of having all that space to myself.
January 15, 2022 at 3:37 pm #1453819Impressive to indicate such large scale in a small painting. I am wondering whether it is achieved somewhat by having such a large percentage of the area for the sky?
Everything else being equal, I would rather be in the painting zone.

January 17, 2022 at 12:16 pm #1454088Thank you Gary, the foreground was interesting to paint and I am happy with the result. The smooth sky did take some time to do and since then I have been trying to create more simple skies.

Winston Churchill.January 17, 2022 at 12:19 pm #1454089Thank you Donna, it is never easy to try and find oneself back in the wild places when living like a sardine in a tin! I wouldn’t have minded when I was young as then I yearned to be in contact with people. Yet as I grow older I seem peace and quiet and noise really does annoy me! I hope you can find yourself a way to get out into the countryside again.

Winston Churchill.January 17, 2022 at 12:22 pm #1454090Hi oldmnartist thanks for commenting. The painting is about 16 x 16 inches so it isn’t that small. But you are right about the big sky giving a feeling of space. I do have bigger canvases but filling up the sky area means using a large brush and that can take forever to clean afterwards! The palette knife does work well to start with!

You are right it is far too small an image and will all going well post a better size image the next time. Looking forward to seeing what is on your easel soon! Many thanks for your comment. Take care.

Winston Churchill.January 29, 2022 at 10:30 am #1455734Very lonesome with an overwhelming and heavy sky, but it is pretty in a cold and wild way. You capture the beauty of nature here, but also its uncaring side; the heavy clouds will rain or snow even if you’re out under them. Nicely done!

Still much to paint and much to learn!
