There is an increasing realization that plastics that can last thousands of years, end up in the ocean and in the soil, poisoning fish and contaminating drinking water.
Some countries proposing taxes on plastics, some implementing taxes, others actually going after the companies producing plastics.
Could this eventually start to affect the price of acrylics? Which is after all, a plastic.
July 12, 2018 at 6:30 am #657011The world will not get rid of plastics . We would need to get rid of EVERYTHING around us. THe war is against the stupid wastage of unneeded plastic. Cups, forks, spoons etc.. there is no good reason to be made of plastic. Soda bottles, coffee jars.. they can all be made of glass.
People that make laws are too stupid to even know that acrylics are plastic.
"no no! You are doing it all wrong, in the internet we are supposed to be stubborn, inflexible and arrogant. One cannot simply be suddenly reasonable and reflexive in the internet, that breaks years of internet tradition as a medium of anger, arrogance, bigotry and self entitlement. Damm these internet newcomers being nice to to others!!!"

July 12, 2018 at 7:24 am #657013Impossible to predict what’s going to happen with this.
Plastics are a relative newcomer to the planet’s ecology. We haven’t yet truly felt the short and long-term effects of their presence. I’m not especially optimistic …
A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.

I think, as the years go on, that the control of all the consumer substances will become intense. Victoria has now banned plastic shopping bags so if you don’t have a bag with you it becomes necessary to carry your bits & purchases.

July 12, 2018 at 10:56 pm #657009I wouldn’t worry so much. Some reading online shows that the really big concern is for the many toxic chemicals in oil-painting thinners, and the paints themselves. And – Acrylics are plastic, but don’t have the impact of all those plastic shopping bags and bottles.
Isn’t a good idea to curtail plastics, in general? Why assume it will inconvenience acrylics painters? There are several tips online to lessen the impact of acrylic paints – some easy ones are:
– Wipe down your brushes, palette knives, and other tools with a paper towel before rinsing them; it helps keep paint out of the water supply.
– Dispose of leftover acrylics in solid form. Acrylic paint forms a film as it dries to lock pigments in, and this keeps them from getting into the environment.

July 14, 2018 at 1:45 am #657010Yeah – just compare the amount of acrylic house paint used to the amount of artist acrylic media. It’s really no contest. But I also try to collect my wasted paint in solid form and dispose of it at our local chemical trash round up.
