I’ve been painting for about 6 years after a 35+ year career as an animal sculptor. I mostly paint landscapes because I enjoy entering shows and live in a beautiful area so I have tons of my own reference photos. I would love to be painting more critters, but since I am not a wildlife photographer my options would be quite limited as to paintings I could enter in shows. I still paint animals but use either free reference sites online or pay for licensing from sites like iStock. It is my understanding that to enter shows the reference must have been taken by you, the artist.

Are wildlife art shows different, allowing for the fact that most of us aren’t going to travel the world and spend lots of $$$ on super zoom lenses?

Go to Content Areas at the top and click on the Reference Image Library. There are lots of animal photos contributed by members that you are free to use.

Thank you but that was not my question. My question was: are there wildlife art shows that allow the use of photos not taken by the artist? The nature (ha ha) of wildlife art is most of us will be using reference taken by others, at least occasionally.

Some people visit zoos to take pictures of wildlife.

If you have the permission of the photographer and give him/her credit, your paintings will be accepted. Of course it is impossible to have take your own photos of eg. African Wildlife unless you go on Safari so naturally your work would be accepted under the above rules. Good luck and have fun.
