Hello everyone! I wanna ask if some of you would be able to list down any Watercolor brands on this topic thread that uses ox gall or a vegan altwrnative within their ingredients? I’m planning to buy some individual professional-grade watercolors in the future as part of my hobby and collection.
For disclaimer, I am not necessarily looking for strictly vegan watercolor paints. I simply want to buy any watercolor paints that flow easily when it comes to pigment dispersion especially on wet on wet.
So far, from what I have researched, it seems that the following famous artist-grade watercolor brands are the ones that incorporate ox gall (vegan or not) into their ingredients (Courtesy of Dr. Oto Kano):
- Schmincke Horadam
- Daniel Smith
- Winsor and Newton Professional
- QOR
If you know any further brands that contain ox gall OR some sort of wetting agent/dispersant that allows for the pigments to flow easily, that would be great too!

Ox gall is a useful wetting agent.

We must leave our mark on this worldMarch 16, 2023 at 11:00 am #1506056Are you looking for paints that have increased flow, or are you asking because you want to use vegan products? If you are looking for increased flow, you can add a dispersant medium to your water – I use QoR synthetic ox gall or Holbein ox gall. Mijello paints do not have any additives or dispersants, so I sometimes use a dispersant with them.
ETA: ox-gall is considered an “additive”, so if a brand says it contains no additives, I take that as an indication that it does not have ox gall or any other dispersant.

C&C welcomeMarch 24, 2023 at 9:59 pm #1507250Hello! Thank you for your suggestions. But just to clarify, yes, I am looking for watercolor paints that contain any ox gall or have increased flow as part of their watercolor ingredients, whether vegan or not.

Any suggestions on watercolor brands that contain or are selling ox gall separately are highly appreciated!
March 25, 2023 at 8:59 pm #1507458Besides the brands you have already listed, A Gallo contains ox gall. Most of the major brands sell an ox gall medium – Holbein, Schmincke, Winsor Newton, Daniel Smith, etc. Qor sells a synthetic version. You simply add 5-10 drops per cup of water. Start with a few drops and add more if you want.
