I’m sorry that I have to say it, but it appears that many talents who roamed this site, and this forum particularly, are gone. Not to ever return, it seems.
I’ve been around here for a number of years and, quite unfortunately, there’s no doubt in my mind that the enthusiasm and talent of earlier years have vanished.
Apart from a bunch of “regulars” and the occasional new entry things have become repetitive and, I’d even say, boring. Pointing to the reasons for this general deterioration is not gonna bring back anyone and/or relieve the boredom. In my humble opinion, it’s all sad but true.
Perhaps the state of affairs here is reflected in the eyes of that boy up here.
If you don’t believe me, search this forum for, say, the years 2003 – 2007 and see what I mean.
Cheers!!May 26, 2018 at 10:05 am #628485I know, I agree with you.
There are a few people that spring to mind that don’t post anymore. I don’t know why they wouldn’t want to support WC, I mean, have they just stopped painting??
Some people do disappear due to work/health issues but they mostly return and I do wonder why those that used to post don’t anymore..it almost feels like they don’t like us anymore lol! I’m kidding.
Anyway just keep on doing what you do so well, and I will do the same!

Having hung around here for over a decade now, there are a lot of ebbs and flows in the forum. We might just be going through a time of change where some voices fade away and new ones join in. I’ve faded out and returned a few times as well. People only have time to keep up with a certain number of communities/groups, and when a new one is exciting and fresh, one of the others has to drop in priority. There are voices and images i miss, of course…
This remains one of the best online communities I’ve found. It has a great balance of critical and supportive commentary that you don’t find in many other places.

And that for the beginningMay 26, 2018 at 1:14 pm #628483Yes, where have they gone? I agree with Rick though that this is still one of the best forums for art. All things change.

perhaps different flowers
some species die off, go dormant
some species are blown in by shifting wind patterns
in some areas there is now too much shade
some meadows are flooded
some meadows are parched
fire has burnt all the seeds of some species
fire has released the seeds of others.Every season will bring color and flowers and scents
not every season will have all three
but as I sit on the porch of the old cabin
I see I watch I listen
there is always beauty and wonder all about meThe old flowers may be gone
but as long as I can recall them
they will not be truly passed
they just shine brightly in my mindTo live lamenting the past
is to ignore the present
and this moment is all we have.
Now go protest a war,
right a wrong,
stick a daisy in the barrel of a gun
create a new future
but never forget the pastI learned from mentors and friends long passed
I learn from those mentors and friends of the present
God willing, I may learn from those to come.greggo

May 26, 2018 at 1:53 pm #628481yes, I could name quite a few that i truly miss, a couple of which left due to health reasons, a few of who left due to technical issues, at least a couple who left for professional reasons (they got rather famous, yay!) and others that i just don’t know whatever became of them.
you post an appropriately thoughtful/quizzical fellow, hairy, well done.

I’m not familiar with the long gone artists on this forum but can say there have been very famous ones affiliated with WC who have matured and morphed on outta here, so am happy for them. Then again searching and looking through the archives I find many who have passed from this life and they are missed!

May 27, 2018 at 8:06 pm #628493I see Picasso’s jesters here. I like Picasso’s jesters, not a lot of Picasso’s I like but this is good.
May 28, 2018 at 12:43 pm #628487I like your painting, Hairy, and your work is never boring.
I do agree completely with your lament. I joined in 2007 and there were so many artists regularly contributing that it was hard to keep up. And that pace continued for many years. These days we still have some wonderful artists – both old and new – but the volume of traffic has diminished considerably. It follows that there is less to see but also less variety.
As to the commenting level, it seems to me it hasn’t changed that much. A typical comment-to-view ratio is about 5% or less, and my perception is that it’s stayed about the same through the years, though I haven’t done a scientific survey. So, although it would be great if more viewers/lurkers would comment, I think the bigger problem is the number of artists actually submitting work. Which is what I think you’re getting at.
I don’t have any magic solutions. Perhaps, as others have said, it’s just a natural ebb and flow.
Keep up your good work, everyone, and tell your artist friends to join in!

http://www.susanbaileyart.comMay 28, 2018 at 7:51 pm #628491I can’t speak to the past, only to the current and hopefully future. This is a superb forum, made that way to a substantial extent by your contributions. There are so many images provided by people willing to share their craft. I come away with some new idea nearly every day.
A general style of painting was trending to a more comic book/manga appearance (IMHO). I’m seeing a resurgence of earlier styles that are more personal and evocative. Wait for it….please.

Yes people come and go. However, I see a whole lot of flowers here on WC!
The essential thing, for me, is to offer a visual expression of those things in our experience that words cannot express www.jim-whalen.artistwebsites.comMay 30, 2018 at 9:32 am #628490Very nice painting Hairy.
