I was wondering after thinking about certain ld studies that suck , are not good for anything but burning, well that would be mine atm what do all you Sweet Guys and dolls do with all those old drawings , I mean the ones on Newsprint are really not that easy to keep are they , I did have this Gentleman at Ld say to me he has this really cool thing he does , he takes them home and repaints them and this is on cartridge I guess , but he paints them all different colours with acrylics and then reuses them , and just keeps doing that and his studies rocked , you could see the previous drawings coming through but I think it gave it character I loved the idea , and just thought it would be nice to share some ideas ….Im guessing they dont all got to that big Ldrawing place in the skies:D
March 7, 2011 at 1:49 am #1146863I sometimes paint cartridge paper with acrylic house paint- when those sample pots are really cheap (’cause someone mixed the wrong colour). I also found some acrylic matt spray paint and it creates a good surface.
I go through them after a few months, mostly I tear them up and put them in the recycle bin.bethany

TomMarch 7, 2011 at 5:11 am #1146862About once a year I sort through them and save the best of them about 2% the rest get burned although lately I just put most of them in the bin in the life drawing room at the end of the session!
March 7, 2011 at 5:40 am #1146861I throw most away, just keep a few where I think I made a step forward.

Charcoals I just rub with a rag and use the grey smudgy surface as a starting point for the next drawing. After a while I will just colour gesso over the paper and use it for pastels. If the pastel drawing does not work I gesso again. If I still have nothing after about three coats of gesso I would bin the paper:)

http://peterorrock.blogspot.com/March 7, 2011 at 7:14 am #1146856Re the newsprint, coat them both sides with acrylic gel. They won’t keep forever, but they will keep for a long time. In any case, if you think you like the drawing, photograph it so you have a good record that you can work from later….The one on newsprint attached below has been around for about a decade, the paper had already started to yellow and decay when I gelled it (the gel made it crinkle); I’ve managed to flog variations in media from wood block to pen and ink. Next goal is to try and litho it…..
C&C of all sorts always welcome! (I don't mind rude or harsh criticism.)
I suppose I have to do this too (my blog, & current work). My Visual Arts Nova Scotia page.

The primary palette: Attention, observation, memory, imagination, integration, executionMarch 7, 2011 at 10:36 am #1146874I do gestures and quick sketches on newsprint pads, which just pile up in a corner. If you’ve done something on newsprint that you would like to keep, however, consider Krylon’s “Make it Acid Free.” http://www.dickblick.com/products/krylon-make-it-acid-free-spray/
March 7, 2011 at 4:06 pm #1146854I used to have big piles of them, throwing some out every now and then… it’s funny the longer you keep them the worse they get :o
I have found that using a thicker paper was much better for recyling… I wouldn’t use ordinary house paint but I do use a commercial acrylic undercoat for the first coat and mixtures of gesso and pastel primer for subsequent coats.
Drawings that I’m reluctant to throw out because maybe some parts worked and some parts didn’t, I have been reworking by adding ink or colour or various things, to see if I can actually turn them into something artistic.
Nearly all the paintings I do at life drawing are on recycled paper
but the recyling bin still gets put to good use!

March 7, 2011 at 7:44 pm #1146866Lots of great idea’s in here. I had bought reams of paper, as I like working on a manilla color. And would save a few better ones and some for growth idea’s. Then just throw away others.

It sounded interesting, but i could see that it could go wonky easily…..give box with various arms, legs, torsos, breasts, feet, hands, and heads to the wrong person…….get the “Oh…….this is….interesting, very interesting” along with the doubtful look as thanks…..
If I try, i may just keep the box for my use.
