Hello all
Could anyone help me picking the best laptop/tablet suitable for digital art please ?
I am currently in need of a new laptop and at the same time a device for digital art ( I am a complete novice in this area however I learn quickly and am dedicated I want the device to be reliable and to last for some time therefore I do not opt for something only beginner-suitable in particular ( my restricted budget ( cca 1300 USD for both devices altogether…).
It may be better to get a separate laptop for work and a tablet for art. However getting both within the budget will be challenging
First, I am curious for your suggestions as to what to buy and if anyone happens to react to my question, I will add options I have selected to choose from.
Thank you so muchJune 10, 2022 at 1:23 am #1473503Check out Teoh’s youtube reviews.
I use a cheap Simbans Picasso Tab Android tablet but wish I had a working iPad.

We must leave our mark on this worldJune 16, 2022 at 7:41 am #1474187I started my journey into digital art with a cheap Wacom One tablet. I did try other tablets like Huion, XP Pen and other tablets but found Wacom to be the best among others. If you want a professional tablet then Wacom Cintiq series is the best and so is iPad if you want to use Procreate.
Personally I would first go for a general low range Wacom to improve my skills and when my skills have grown I would switch to Wacom Intuos and later to Wacom Cintiq according to my needs or choose to buy an iPad to work on Procreate. Some artists do prefer a pen tablet to a display tablet. So I would choose Wacom Intuos Pro if I need a pen tablet or a Wacom Cintiq or an iPad if I want a display tablet.
I hope this helps.

I am just looking into the Wacom range..to be able to use one, I would also need to get a laptop with a HDMI slot and I do not know which one to get, since buying Wacom tablet, I would be left with 500 GBP for a new laptop.
Any suggestions anyone ?
Also – could you ( or anyone else ) suggest which one of the ipads to get ? What to be careful about ? How much memory and minimum size of screen should I opt for ? The prices differ so much.
June 16, 2022 at 9:22 am #1474195Under that price (500GBP) I would get an Acer Aspire 3. Acer produces good laptops. The specification matches your requirements. Please ask around for the customer service before buying as I wouldn’t know about the area where you live. I live in the northeast of India and Acer provides good service here.

You may also want to upgrade the ram to 16 gigs as that would provide long term use. This can be done later.
As for the iPad, an iPad Pro would give you a serious hardware if you have money to invest but you can also go for iPad Air 5th Generation if you don’t want to invest so much.

June 18, 2022 at 7:30 am #1474422I use a Huion wireless (Bluetooth) drawing tablet with my PC and my Surface Pro 8 – both Windows 11 machines, so there is no need for an additional port in my machines. I used the tablet with a laptop and a PC that both ran Windows 10 but had to upgrade, and the tablet/pen work wonderfully with both sets of machines at a much lower cost than Wacom drawing tablets of similar specifications. Caveat: Huion prices have been increasing with their popularity and soon will be on par with comparable Wacoms.
Not knocking Wacom at all – they are grand drawing tablets that many successful professional artists use, but, to me, higher price does not necessarily indicate better value.
Some of the Microsoft Surface machines are touted to be excellent for creating digital art and some models are within your budget. No HDMI ports, but you can use a USB-C to HDMI adapter.
What I have found, though, is that the software is more important to smooth creation than the hardware. I use Painter 2022, which worked flawlessly on the Windows 10 boxes, but does not play well with Windows 11. So, I am now trying to learn Krita, the free, open source art software.
Edit 7/9/2022. Because my PC and my Surface Pro run W-11, I upgraded to Painter 2023 and most of the problems have been resolved. Not faring well with Krita due to time constraints.
Skill is nothing more than talent practiced relentlessly.
April 7, 2023 at 4:11 am #1508945If you want portablity and mobility, go for a tablet like the samsung galaxy tab or iPad.
I use an Ipad pro with Apple Pencil and Procreate. Very happy with it, but not cheap.
If you want to use a particular windows program, a laptop and a drawing tablet (with or without screen) from wacom, huion or xp-pen.
