This was painted for a friend of mine to give to her son. It’s painted from a photo that she took; I never saw the house in person. I think it was 20×16 and it was acrylic on canvas. That chimney not being centered in the house and the roof line being a little crooked bugged me, but that’s how it was.

March 22, 2020 at 6:15 pm #964071I really like the way you painted the lights from within coming out of the windows and that door and trim around the door is fantastic. Excellent backlighting for dusk/nocturne. I think I would move the chimney over anyway using your artistic license….

Beautifully painted with lots of attention to those window panes which are a pain to paint. LOL
Nice job indeed. I am sure she was thrilled.
JohnMarch 22, 2020 at 9:57 pm #964065The light coming out the windows is great but the light coming through the fence sold me. The whole painting sells the story line.
As far as things being straight, I think that it most important that things be consistent. If 99% of a painting is photo realistic perfect, the other 1% stands out. Look at a Van Gogh still life and everything is off kilter; and it is all wonderful. Things being a little off in your painting creates a good atmosphere to me. It lends the painting a charm.

March 22, 2020 at 11:26 pm #964067Nice use of tree foliage to break the ‘lines’ of the building which direct attention to areas of interest elsewhere.
The harmony, time of day & light direction are all well portrayed.
Good advice from Wes & Gary regarding the chimney.Well Painted !

March 23, 2020 at 11:27 am #964073Ohiohawk97, thanks so much! I’m not sure if the light in the windows is showing through the house, or reflecting off a taller building across the street, but I liked the look so I painted it. I agree that artistically I could have moved the chimney, but I generally paint what I see in a commission. They may like the offset chimney.
Dcam, thanks so much Derek. I like doing house portraits; glad you like the way it turned out. Thanks again!
Reddyman, thanks for your comments! Panes are a pain, but they do add a hint of realism to the look. She was very pleased with the work and her son liked it as well. Her daughter also commissioned a house portrait from me. I forget if it was before or after this one. Thanks again!
Trikist, thanks for commenting! ” Things being a little off in your painting creates a good atmosphere to me. It lends the painting a charm.” I agree. I just don’t want all the talented people here to think I don’t know it’s off. Thanks again!
Aussiesrus1, thanks so much Michael. Your comment struck me as very well observed. I painted this a while ago, I had held off on posting it anywhere because it was to be a gift and I don’t generally post till they are given, and I forgot I had done it. When I came across it the other day, I noticed exactly what you said about the trees, As I said I had forgotten painting it, so it was like viewing someone else’s work, so I noticed what worked and what was off a bit I was pleased with the little hints of trees I had placed here and there. Thanks again!
tuscanny, thanks so much. Always a pleasure to read your comments! Thanks!
Hans Neuhart, thanks so much Hans. Means a lot from you since your paintings always have such lovely drama.
bartc, thanks so much for your comment. Yes, this one does recall his Red House works and similar. I usually paint my house portraits from an angle, but this one has so much character from the front, and of the photos she took this one had the most interesting light. Thanks again.

Winston Churchill.March 25, 2020 at 6:17 pm #964059Hi David,
The darkness kind of gives it a sense of foreboding, as if there’s a storm about to hit. It also ups the drama factor, which I think is different and kind of cool! The house is very well painted as is the light behind it and the dramatic sky! I also like how you painted the light coming through the rear windows and showing up on the front windows. Well done!

March 26, 2020 at 6:51 am #964072A super atmospheric painting, David. Love the light coming from the left!

Skyenorth, thanks for your comments!
RandyP, thanks so much for your observations and comments. I am not sure if the light was reflected from a taller building across the street or through the back of the building I was painting (I never saw the house in person and the photo wasn’t clear on that), but I liked the effect that I saw in the photo and portrayed it in paint. Much appreciated!
Bizzibee, thanks so much. In the photo there were rays of light coming across the building I was painting and I decided that was too corny so I reduced it to a high contrast negative space, which looked better to me and gave me three bright areas.
