I see everybody got the right idea re: B+W. The straight B+W is called NOTAN. Next time when you’re getting ready to blast with color try this trick. Get a piece of transparent red plastic. I use the cover from a storage container. Study the image you are about to paint through the red filter. That’s your grisaille. Sketch that in B,W and Gray on your canvas. Now you’re ready to paint. Another trick on composition. Use this concept when balancing the B, W and G. It’s called PINT, QUART, GALLON. Decide of the BWG has the most area. It becomes GALLON. Which is the least. It’s PINT. The third becomes QUART.

Example: In Colin’s BWG, I think W is Gallon, G is Pint, and B is Quart. I use this concept to lay out my color palette.

Thanx for your concerns about my hand. Stitches out on Tues. Fingers still sausage-like but the bruising colors moving from purple to yellows and greens.

I hope your hand heals well Jim.

Sorry, I didn’t get the paints out this month. But you all have done a good job.

        C&C always welcome. Michelle

Cindy – love the windswept scene, it looks even windier than my beach!

Jim  –  sorry to hear about the injury, I hope it is healing. Nice work, even painted with the ‘wrong’ hand.

Ozeanbay – that’s very nice. I love the colour palette. The grisaille is tinged blue on my monitor which gives it a very moody look.

Colin – lovely job.  Nice light/shadows

Thanks everyone for their kind comments on my effort – though I think I prefer my grisaille to the finished painting.

Thanks very much for hosting the challenge Jim;  I think we have all learnt a lot from it.

Colin – Very nice.  I also like the primary color scheme you used.
Ron – I liked my black & white better than my color version too.  Funny, up until now I have always preferred color pictures.
Thanks to all for your kind words on my work.

                Regards,

Jim, Thanks again for the challenge and the tips. I’ll try to keep the “gallon, quart, pint” in mind. I didn’t realize it until Ron mentioned seeing blue in my grisaille, but I grabbed my Payne’s Grey instead of black for my underpainting. Oops! I hope it still works with what you challenged us with–it’s a type of grey!

All the images are in black and white. Just like the old masters, who always began their paintings in the grisaille style [Grisaille (/ɡrɪˈzaɪ/ or /ɡrɪˈzeɪl/; French: grisaille, lit. ‘greyed’ [ɡʁizaj], from gris ‘grey’) is a painting executed entirely in shades of grey or of another neutral greyish colour.] your challenge is to enlighten us by beginning your painting in the grisaille style and finishing it in spring colors.

Thanks, everyone for your kind comments on my painting. I’m happy with how it worked out! It’s really interesting how luminescent it looks in direct sunshine versus indirect or low light. I’m thinking it’s all the layers of transparent paint. Very cool. :)

Well, one of the things about those layers of transparent glazes is that they are supposed to trap light and make colours seem richer …. so maybe it really does work!!!??

                    Cheers, Maureen

Thanks Jim.  Good challenge and I certainly appreciated the chance to get out of my usual rut.

It looks like there is no one signed up to host for the merry month of May, so I will put something together.  Decisions decisions.

Whoops – on further enquiry I discovered Merri is hosting next month.   So it will be the Merri month of May…
