Maureen: very nice composition and colours. I like the way you’ve framed the person on the beach.

April 21, 2021 at 6:14 am #1401975Wow! I found this challenge very challenging. Grisaille is a time-consuming method, I can’t imagine doing it in oils and having to wait for each layer to dry
I made the mistake of not having a single reference image, so I couldnt check against a single photoshopped greyscale. I chose to go for a British summer beach scene – ie (windy).
Its painted on re-used 30×40 canvas board. The keen-eyed might spot the shipwrecked quinquereme lurking under a layer of gesso, from the tryptich that never was.

April 21, 2021 at 6:51 am #1401997First off, Thank-you to Jim for hosting this month and for choosing Grisaille, a style I needed to learn.
Mine is 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 acrylic on canvas board. First is my Grey scale picAnd here is the color version.
Please pardon the re-used board. I will return after I look at everyone else’s work.
Cindy
Regards,
Cindy

April 21, 2021 at 7:25 am #1402014Wow Ron, love that windy beach scene ( shame about the buried ship!) …. both grisaille and colour works very well.
Cindy, as do both of yours! Same ref as Christel but a different finish ….
It was a good challenge Jim … sorry not to add my thanks in my earlier posts ….. so miffed about the Uploader being temperamental! Sorry!
Waiting for yours Mary!
Cheers, Maureen

Maureen – Beautiful job! Really like the lady on the beach.
Ron – I agree on oils, can’t wait that long. Nice greyscale scene and very cheery color version.

April 22, 2021 at 12:11 am #1402209Maureen -Wow! beautiful!
Ron – Well done!
Cindy – great version of those chairs!
Thanks for the great comments on my work. I should add, even though the glazing is cool technique, I’ll still use more opaque colors next time I try something like this

April 22, 2021 at 3:47 pm #1402463Sorry, I’m a little late with my own challenge. I had an accident with my painting hand and wound up with 9 stitches two days ago. Makes it a little difficult to hold a brush. So part of these are painted with non-dominant hand and so are a bot shaky. Anyway here are my own challenge ptgs.

April 22, 2021 at 10:49 pm #1402513Christel–I love the energy, especially of the water. I also like the luminescent yellow chair.
Maureen–Your value range and composition are lovely. I’m still impressed you painted it so quickly!
Ron–Awww…no triptych of the ships. I was looking forward to that. I do like this one though, especially your upturned chair.
Cindy–A bright and airy painting! I like the soft clouds in the sky.
Thank you, Jim, for the challenge! It was a good one and a growing experience. I’m very sorry to hear about your injury though. I like the way you captured the sunshine in your painting.
