It really is a good method for getting tones correct from the start.

What’s the policy on nudity for these challenges?

        C&C Always welcome.

Just mark your post as containing nudity…… as long as it isn’t pornographic  its OK.

We don’t, any longer, have butt icons for posts, just tell us in your opening line before uploading.:)

        Cheers, Maureen

I’m almost done with my grisaille. I keep finding things to tweak but overall, I’m proud of it. Now, I have to learn glazing. I’m excited.

Msdg welcome to the group! Lovely to have newcomers join us :good:

Gigi … wow, put me to shame eh??? …. better get cracking !

There are some classrooms about glazing in the Information Kiosk.

                    Cheers, Maureen

Cool. I might not even do it actually. Depending on the pose I go with, it may or may not show a bit of “anatomy”.

On a related note, I just want to complain loudly about how freaking idiotic it is that it’s so difficult to find anatomically correct 3d pose models. The program I use, daz 3d, has them but they’re locked behind a $200 paywall in a “pro pack”, which even if I could afford it, has a ton of other crap I’m never gonna use and shouldn’t have to pay for. It’s disgusting ?

There’s a few 3rd party ones out there (on porn render sites, naturally), but I shouldn’t have to, you know?

                        C&C Always welcome.

AES, check the Figure drawing forum here, someone may know of a programme to use …. $200 does seem a bit much!

I’ve done my grisaille today … yippee! :yahoo:

It really is a good method for getting tones correct from the start.

This keeps ringing through my head as I see how I’m getting the tones wrong, but I think I’m at a stopping point with trying to fix those (and all the other issues). I’ve worked and reworked it enough. I think I’m going to accept the imperfections and call the grisaille done and start on the glazing. Eeek!!! This is where I went wrong when I tried this method before.

I took a picture of the greyscale painting with a color wheel included to help show I didn’t cheat. :)

I’ve been going through the information kiosk for glazing info and the links that are working are really great! Sadly, a lot of links are not working. I did have some additional success with a search string of “glaze maverick.” Amongst other things that showed up, there was June 2018 Different Strokes on glazing! A ton of helpful information was posted.

I’m finished with mine; quite happy with the grissaille as stand alone painting; but – using clear colors instead of opaque does darken my painting. I should have taken this into account and lightened my reference for the b/w painting

                            #1400085

                            That’s an interesting observation Christel!

I’m about to start my glazing today …. realised how difficult that will be with certain aspects of my subject! Duh!

Oz … (abbreviated even more, sorry!) …. have you tried working with a tonal strip ( like a colour wheel but white, greys and black in line) and holding against the tone in your ref? Squinting reduces the colour and allows the tone to be dominant or just match to a greyscale ref.  I know you probably know all this … sorry!

Maverick, who posted here regularly at one time, was/is a lovely, meticulous painter … he was very helpful and generous with sharing methods/techniques.

It’s really sad that so much of our archival base was lost in the transfer … I have done some searches using Wayback Machine but it’s time-consuming!

                            Right ….. paint …. Glazes …..

                            Cheers, Maureen

                                Ugh I’m stuck….

I’ve got 3 different scenes in mind, but none of them are quite right. It doesn’t help that I’m not used to doing landscapes with such obvious horizon lines either. For these, the perspective is super important.

If this wasn’t a challenge, I’d stick them up here and ask “which one of these do y’all think would look best on a wall?”, but I can’t ?

@charliesmum, I checked out the figure forum. Looks like they deal with mostly real life figures vs 3d models, but I might post anyway. Maybe the posing aspect will interest them if nothing else.

Come to think of it, the digital forum might know??? realistic 3d models are used in lots of 2d renders too. Ideas ideas…

                                C&C Always welcome.

… can’t believe it’s not last minute again!

AES–I wish I could help you choose your reference. It sounds like you have some good ideas and I’m glad you found some avenues to try in helping you with your virtual models.

Christel–That’s a really good point. Next painting I’ll also try to remember to lighten my reference.

Maureen–Done already! Congratulations! Using the Wayback Machine is genius…I’ll have to try that. I was especially sad to not be able to access everything of Maverick’s. He really was very generous, talented, and helpful. I hope he’s doing well now.

I’ve been doing my best to squint and have been using this tonal strip (sorry it’s not the best picture):

My reference has so many subtle shadings. I’m wondering if I’m not sampling enough with my tonal strip or squinting enough. Also, I think part of my problem is (1) controlling the lighting in my painting area and (2) the lighting on/behind my reference (which is a black/white printout clipped to the side of my easel). Then there’s also (3) painting thinly over other values…and I’m also (4) using student grade paints that shift when dried. (I’m guessing I may receive a tongue lashing for not using better quality paints. I’m trying to use what I can afford, and not waste what I have.)

It’s a learning experience! And fun. Now, for the glazing to begin…
