Over in the Palette Addicts thread, I mentioned that I wanted to get a few half pans from a different brand to go in my Cotman Sketchers Pocket Box. Ingegerd pointed out that not all half pans would fit; eg. the Schmincke half pans would just get stuck. This made me wonder if anyone has ever bought pans or half pans for a particular box only to find that they didn’t fit, since there seem to be slight variations between the manufacturers.
I thought I’d start a thread where we can hopefully compile a list of dimensions for the different pans and half pans, so people can make sure that the pans they want will fit the box they are buying them for. Measurements will be provided for the top of the pan, the bottom of the pan and the height of the pan (height will refer to the plastic pan itself only, not any part of the actual paint cake that protrudes over the top). I’ll start with mine:
Lukas 1862 half pan
Top: 19mm X 16.5mm
Bottom: 17.5mm X 15mm
Height: 9mmSchmincke Horadam Aquarelle half pan
Top: 19mm X 16mm
Bottom: 19mm X 16mm
Height: 8mmSennelier Aquarelle half pan
Top: 19mm X 16mm
Bottom: 18mm X 15mm
Height: 9.5mmWinsor and Newton Artists half pan
Top: 19mm X 15mm
Bottom: 17mm X 14mm
Height: 8mmKnowledge is power. Power corrupts. Study hard. Be evil.

We must leave our mark on this worldNovember 29, 2012 at 8:37 am #1175282I know that the half-pans from Daniel Smith are also too large for the Cottman pocket sketcher kit, but right now I don’t have any way to accurately measure them.
Perhaps someone with the DS pans can?
Also, it would be helpful if the Cottman pans could be measured.

The Cotman half pans (at least the ones I have) are the same dimensions as the WN Artist half pans.

Okay, that stands to reason.

I called yesterday to get their measurements to replace my schmincke pans (they won’t work). They are VERY willing to give the measurements, just make sure to ask for them in Metric. “Just over 5/8 inch x just over 1/2 inch” doesn’t cut it! LOL.
I’m just going to order schmincke blanks.

November 29, 2012 at 11:09 am #1175280I have the Kremer half and full pans at home. I’ll measure them this evening and post the dimensions.

Top: 19 mm x 16.5 mm
Bottom: 18 mm x 15 mm
Height: 9.5 mmI bought these and I have the Cotman pocket sketcher kit. They’re slightly too big, but they will go in the little holes and if you add a little tacky stuff to the bottom of the pan, they’ll stay in.

I bought a bunch of these empty when I ordered their travel boxes, so I don’t have any other to compare against. These measurements are very slightly rounded because I measured in inches and converted to metric.
Kremer half pans
Top: 19 mm x 17.75 mm
Bottom: 18.25 mm x 15 mm
Height: 9.5 mmKremer full pans
Top: 19 mm x 30.25 mm
Bottom: 18.25 mm x 29.25 mm
Height: 9.5 mmThe tops are slightly larger than the bottoms.

TredThese are the measurements from an empty half pan I got from ArtMaterials[/URL] in Australia. I don’t know what ‘brand’ they are.

Good to know. My wife and I attended a three day pocket sketching class and use the Cotman sketcher kit (14 half-pans). I would like to replace the Cotman pigments as they run out with DS. Maybe hot glue?

I use magnets to hold pans in my sketch boxes, so the width and length aren’t critical anymore. But the height is! What with the added magnet stuck to the bottom of the pan, it’s important to know if the box will snap closed. So for those heights <---- Thank you, one and all! Jan
November 30, 2012 at 12:54 pm #1175268For those who may consider using (upside-down) LEGO bricks as paint pans: standard size of a “full-pan” brick is:
TOP: 15.8 x 31.8 mm
BOTTOM: same
HEIGHT: 9.6mm when joined with another lego piece, otherwise 11.4 mm total height -
