Hi everyone,
I got given a water-soluble oil kit recently for a present. I’ve never really used oils before.
How long does it take to realistically dry? Can I use the oil paints in a notebook to do my daily miniature artworks (usually 4x4in size)? Or do I HAVE to use canvases/boards?
According to Google:
When diluted thinly with water they can dry within 5 – 10 minutes, when used straight from the tube or mixed with drying oils, they can dry within 1 – 3 days, depending on how thick you paint, the water-mixable oils retain their elasticity and workability for up to 48 hours.

We must leave our mark on this world
Certainly you can use oils (regular and water-soluble) in notebooks/thick paper, I’ve done that many times. But painting daily in your notebook will very likely not give enough drying time to prevent the pages from smearing or sticking. Depending on the color/pigment (and many other factors), it’ll take about 2 days to a week or more to be dry to the touch. To fully cure (harden) will take much longer. Until then, you can use waxed paper in between the pages if you’re getting sticking.
If you’re painting directly on paper without any primer/gesso, you’ll likely get noticeable yellow staining over time from bleeding of the oil. In my experience, priming or sealing the paper first solves this problem.

That must be written by someone living in Hell . 5-10 minutes… Mine may settle, kind of dry, a bit faster than relatively fast drying non wmo brand, in 3-5 days, but then they will remain tacky forever. I would never use them in a notebook.
Royal talens has a quick drying wmo medium made with some alkyd,.maybe that can help…
