Thanks for looking. Long name after the tradition of Kensett and others of the Gilded Age.

28X14 in on Fabriano Artistico cold press paper sealed with several layers of medium before painting. I thought I would take a foto before the DAGS (Dreaded Acute Glare Syndrome) sets in with the additional layers of medium to come.

A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.

Hey Cliff, you are getting closer to Rothko!… That’s not a bad progression!

Thank you, HW. I take that as a compliment. I like Mark Rothko’s stuff. I don’t want to be too derivative, though.

But then I think I’m solving a different problem. This reflects, to a degree, an external landscape. Rothko’s, I think, was more about his internal landscape.

It is colourful and minimal. Very contemplative. It is an external landscape that leads inward, I think.

I am sure Blue will want a sailboat. Consider painting a sailboat shaped skin that can be peeled on and off at a whim. :)

Yes, Rothko was trying to penetrate the skin and create something soulful by means of color fields. There are so many people for whom those color fields are just that. As for your work, Cliff, in this one you depicted the external on the verge of complete abstraction (yes, color fields) which for me makes the scene internal.

Yo can always scan them, the glare does not appear then :)

Hi Colin, thank you. Glad you commented; very thoughtful observation. Maybe I could insert a clip art sailboat after the fact. That would keep Blue happy, perhaps.

Fede, glad you like it. Unfortunately I don’t have a scanner of that size. I have a hunch that, given the texture of the paper, there would be some light reflected.

Hairy, I understand what you’re saying. I have a very hard time making a coherent painting without some kind of external reference. Also my habits as a landscaper, to pull the viewer into the painting, will probably always have an influence.

                    so sorry Cliff, but I’m a lost for a comment…..sailboat?????….let’s see….

in all my life painting and visiting hundreds of museums and galleries, I never came across Rothko and Internal/External landscapes……IMHO….THANK GOODNESS!

a forest in the sky, dropping it’s leaves into the lake, coloring it a deep ‘fuchsia’……..

NO, I would not put a pretty white sailboat into a polluted lake!….

but there is art for everyone, so I’m sure there are those that would love to sail in this delightful, colorful, painting….

Hi Blue. Glad you found it delightful and colorful.

But yes, I feel I’m being pulled toward abstraction and simplicity.

just checked Rothko out….he said people cried when they looked at his art….I didn’t cry, just scratched my head!…

but if you like, we can all shed a tear , when you post a painting, if it makes you feel you are on the right track!……if we smile, you will know something is wrong!……just trying to help

I think the idea is you have to see the color field paintings in person. They are not small.

but I agree with ‘Hairy Wolf’ here…your painting appears to reflect the quality that Rothko was trying to project….. …a very interesting, concept out of the past, very worthwhile updated in this new decade….

thanks Blue. I’m sitting here at the confluence of three different influences which are not necessarily compatible. Not entirely sure how to resolve them.

let your personal influence guide your composition…..adnire others work but be your own man!……I’ve painted lots of ‘sunflowers’ and admire the originators but still have both my ears…..  !

Wait, you paint sunflowers with your ears? I must try that. Or maybe I’ll borrow a pair from Mr. Potato Head.
