Hello! Has anyone used this paper? Does anyone currently have any? I am curious about it but unable to purchase almost $100 just to see…

The idea of it being partially linen and woven sounds neat.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

            Hi SSB,

I was reading a magazine this morning on my train journey to work which talked about linen watercolour papers being used by Isabey amongst others at the time.

Except for very few references on the web including the Italian Art Store that you mentioned there is very little information.

Peter, also one of our members, has discussed it in his blog:

            Kind regards.

I believe watercolourfanatic (Peter Ward) has used it in the past. Try PM’ing him.

Hi, SSB! Are you able to discern if there is a “weave” in the paper (the kind of weave that is in canvas). If there is, you have to allow for it when you watercolor, as the watercolor can “bead” up on the lines and give some straight lines you don’t want. Most cold press/rough press have “random” hills and valleys, which will also capture paint, but not in straight lines…

I forgot to say, with the linen, I think it may be a very strong, tough paper. If not for watercolor, perfect for Acylic or Oil?

Moldau watercolour paper is a beautiful paper, a mixture of cotton and linen. I first heard about it from Charles Reid – he used it on his recent `Figurative Watercolours’ DVD. After a six month (!) chase I finally managed to obtain some. I bought the 130lb (280gm) weight and they also do a 300lb (640gm). This was detailed on my blog as `The Saga of Moldau Watercolour Paper’ and it was a saga! My initial enquiries brought e-mail replies in Czech but eventually someone contacted me who said he’d been appointed the UK agent (as a result of my paper chase) and I purchased 40 sheets of A2. It proved difficult to even get a firm price – which kept changing (Add on 20% Czech VAT- an afterthought), estimate the carriage charges – then they sent the wrong weight (90lb)!) Unfortunately none of the UK mail order specialists carry this paper. I contacted the German Great Art but they didn’t want to know – they obviously knew the problems. Velke Losiny have a retail shop at the Mill, which has been going for centuries, so if you ever go to Czechoslovakia call in and buy a ship load.

I love the paper but the difficulty of getting it was so great that in the end I decided not to bother again. It is available from Italian Art in the USA but being handmade is very expensive. If I could get it easily I might do so but the price would be an issue for many.

                    Peter:)

Thanks for the responses. I was hoping someone had some they may want to sell. Is there such a thing as a Wet Canvas buying group? It would be neat to be able to go in with someone since the paper only comes in 100$ increments. I guess perhaps the shipping would be difficult. I would still like to try some someday.
