Hi! I wonder if any of you have tried the Vallejo Artist Fluid Acrylics?

I’ve tried their range of acrylic gouache and I love how it feels and that the surfice works great for mixed media, such as brush pens and coloured pencil. They are easy blendable and very flat and dries to a lovely matte finish. Lightfast and lots of colors. Great for illustration. But… The color-shift from wet to dry is terrible. Also, there are not so many “one pigment only”-colors. A lot of the colors have Titanium white in them, pw6, and I think that is one of the things that makes the color-shift so bad as I have noticed that mixes with pw6 in it has a tendency to shift more.

So I’m curious about the Artist Fluid line. I hope the color shift is less and that I can control it more since more colors are of one pigment. But I rarely see artists using it… I have tried the Golden Fluid line but I think it’s a bit “sticky” in consostency, not as much as the Liquitex but not as smooth as the Vallejo Acrylic Gouache.

Let me know if you have tried it. I have ordered two colors (buff Titanium and black) so I will update with my opinions. But you know how hard it can be when you’re waiting for something. :P

Wow Terato: I thought I’d heard of every brand. Vallejo is a new one for me.
I have Liquitex, Golden, Atelier, and I pretty much like all 3.
really curious about Vallejo (not cheap).
            Looking forward to your review.

I’m really curious too! And here in Europe you can get them at a pretty good price. I mean, not student grade cheap but cheaper then Golden Fluids. A 100ml bottle of Vallejo costs about as much as a 30ml Golden. Hope I like it! The company claims that they have minimal color shift:

Ok, they arrived today and here comes my first impressions!

                    Color-shift:
I have only tried buff titanium and lamp black but straight out of the tube the color-shift is not very big. When I mix a warm mid gray of the two colours the shifting is a bit worse. W&N Professional is a bit better and D&R Cryla even better but it’s not as bad as AV Acrylic Gouache. I also tried it on unprimed watercolor paper now so worst possible conditions for color shifting.

                    Consistency:
Wow, I’m in love! It’s super fluid. More fluid then both the Acrylic Gouache and Golden Fluid. And it doesn’t have that stickyness that Golden and Liquitex have, that I don’t like. It flows so good!

                    Pigmentation:
                    They feel really, really pigmented.

                    Blending:
I think this is the best part. It seems to blend amazingly good. I mean, even on the wc paper. I can excuse it for the color-shifting if it blends as great as it feels in this testing!

I also tried the matte medium, which is the same binder as the paints. It’s matte but not chalky matte. The more layers you apply, the glossier it gets, as with the paints (and theese colours are two of the matte shades). Other colors will be glossier. But I like to have the possibility to matten a color down if I need to, and to be able to do some nice glazes and this medium will work great for that.

I am so excited! Will update on how my markers and coloured pencils go on top of it.

Will also do a small project (a child portrait on fine canvas board) and then make an update. From earlier experience I’ve noticed that’s the only way to get to know a new material.

Ok, my daughter seems to sleep a bit longer so here comes a short update on the mixed media part.

My Faber Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pens goes on okay but they don’t stick as good as they do on the AV Acrylic Gouache. Also tried on the matte medium only and it gave the same results. Apparently, the binders are a bit different.

Same with my coloured pencils. They stick like a dream on the AV Acrylic Gouache but on this, the addherance is not very good at all.

So if I fall in love with theese, I will still keep my acrylic gouache for mixed media.

Thank you for the review. These fluid acrylics are very popular for airbrushing. Good to know they work fine with a normal brush.

I have some Vallejo Heavy Body acrylics and their pigment load is great, nothing to complain about them.

                                Yeah, I’ve read that too!

                                Interesting!

I can now update on how they work in action. I have worked on this piece for about two hours. Lamp black and Buff Titanium on Jackson’s Extra Fine Linen Canvas Board. Also used Winsor and Newtons Flow Improver but other than that, nothing else.

Well, I’m still in love. They blend sooo well! I both like them straight out of the jar and thinned down with water. I think the drying time is perfect for me. A little slower than many other brands I’ve used. And on this surface, in fact I don’t notice any color shifting at all. Nothing. And I’ve mixed the colors many times and remixed on top of earlier dry mixes on the palette. It works great. I have come back to rework different areas several times and it just… Works.

I feel like this works WITH me instead of AGAINST me. There are no brushmarks either. Seems absolutely perfect for realistic paintings. Will update again when this painting is finished to see if it handles well on the last touches too.

The next day of painting I did notice some color shifting. So, probably the shifting comes slowly. Still not very bad and i did get some nice defining and blending done today.
