This is another plein air composite with a different background as I really wanted to accomplish something with a bit of a sense of distance. There were no clouds present so I put some in to give it a bit more life. I admit I’m starting to appreciate the freedom involved in manipulating these scenes as opposed to doing what I normally do which is to make them as literal as possible. Oil on board 40.5cm x 30.5cm

We must leave our mark on this worldSeptember 11, 2023 at 1:33 am #1525814This is very good and I love the title. I would like to see you figure out a way to put a touch of red in your paintings, as it would really stand out.
Everything else being equal, I would rather be in the painting zone.

September 11, 2023 at 5:13 am #1525827Excellent piece Matthew! That tree is majestic in the composition and I especially like how you painted the hills and supporting trees going back into the distance. I like that you added the clouds. The atmosphere is amazing in this one.

Scenes like this with rolling hills and old majestic trees are always a treat…. such idyllic settings. You paint these old trees so well and that wonderful clear blue sky really provides the perfect setting to round out this painting. Nicely done.

September 12, 2023 at 8:21 pm #1525974Lots of character in that tree. I like your comments about taking some artistic license. It worked out great for you in this. I like the little hint of clouds. Good light, composition and feel of distance and atmosphere.

Reed, the weather in Victoria is very changeable so I have to make the most of any consistent forecasts and get out there and get busy. But such are the drawbacks of plein air painting as we all know : )

September 16, 2023 at 2:39 am #1526255Matthew: The inclusion of the receding clouds has helped add some vertical perspective adding to the sense of depth. A majestic tree, and the warmth and interest in the trunks brings it all together. Beautiful.
September 19, 2023 at 9:09 am #1526593AnonymousBeautiful, rolling hills are always captivating and that tree is majestic as Arnie said. The hills have beautiful colours and simplicity. The tree is great. If it was my painting I would be tempted to make the trunk less apparent in the middle part of the tree, perhaps with some leaves, or less intense colour, but never trust my ideas, they are volatile!
