My husband and I are having a debate on whether I need to unplug my kiln when I am not using it. I have one of the Skutt digital bead kilns. The directions do not say anything about unplugging when not in use. My husband says it will last longer if I unplug? So I was curious to see others opinion on this??? Thanks for your input

            I don’t unplug my kiln.

Hmm… I do unplug my toaster, however.

                Unplug it???? What ever for?

                Last longer???? Probably Not!!!!

Do you always unplug your toaster or microwave oven, or TV or table lamps????

It’s either ON or OFF…….. It will last as long as it lasts.

no need to unplug the kiln it wont make it last longer.
and as far as as saftey, as long as the kiln is off no problems.

I’ve got the same kiln. It stays plugged in all the time )unless I need the plug for something else ;) ). The only thing unplugging might help with is saving $0.05 a month on the electric bill or power surge from a lightning strike, otherwise I can’t see any point.

as people have already said, there is no need to unplug your kiln, but it won’t hurt. and there is something to be said for getting in the habit of unpluging it. then you KNOW its off. the only reason to unplug it is for a little extra peace of mind, but it won’t do anything to the kiln life.

I unplug my kiln after everytime I use it. Paranoia, I guess. But I’m the kind of person who has had to leave the lake house early to go back home because I might have left the electric blanket on.

I dont have my kiln up..But I would unplug just for the simple fact of It makes me feel safer. I do unplug most of my electronic products that are not in use. Much to my husbands annoyance. you would be surprised how much money you save on electricity a month by unplugging things when they are not in use. I also have a 4 yr old. so it does insure his safety if I am not looking.

If your Skutt is like my 1018 the digital display stays on when the kiln is off. Is this why your husband wants to unplug it?

If I was concerned, I would email Skutt & ask them what they think.

Personally, I would be concerned about wear on the plug. If your husband is set on this course, why not have the outlet wired to a switch. That way you could turn off the power without having to pull the plug all the time.

Wouldn’t unplugging the kiln help protect the digital controller from power surges from lightning? That’s why I unplug mine.

Reading these messages made me curious. So I went and checked out the manuals for the kiln and the controller. Both of them, in the Safety section, state that when the kiln is not in use to “disconnect” or “unplug” it. I’ve always unplugged them……I unplug toasters too. Still remember that time my family and I returned home from a weekend away to fire trucks lined up along the road right in front of our house. Turned out to be a charter bus that had had a small engine fire (we live in the country…seems like any fire gets all the fire trucks out :) ) but I still vividly remember that, so I’m probably overly cautious.

I live in Florida so I have mine plugged into a surge protector, like you use for a computer with battery back up. I do not trust lightning. I unplug it from the surge protector all the time when a storm hits. I figure the surge protector will protect the digital controler from resetting if a storm hits and I am not home. It has happened to my ceramic kilns. I do not want to loose another kiln. I have already had one digital card burn up and need replacing on a kiln. I have also lost many appliances, not to mention trees peeled like a banana.
