        My oil/acrylic drying ideas.

        For oil paint:

Linseed oil -> Oxidation -> Hydroperoxide lipid -> Decomposition ->Polymer stage + volatile product -> Hydrolysis -> liquid product + free fatty acids -> reaction with Zinc white or other soluble metal ions -> lithification (brittle but stable ionomeric product formation) + free soap formation -> free soap and fatty acids efflorescence on the surface + cracked lithificated ionomeric substance.

        for acrylic:

Acrylic dispersion -> water evaporation -> surfactant migration on the surface or between layers -> acrylic globules bonding with each other (coalescense) -> film formation -> film shrinkage.

            Acrylic polymers decompose too.

I am an organic chemist but never got involved with paints. Retired and now interested in painting. I am very interested to know the mechanism of drying process. If you have any references to share, I would greatly appreciate.

                C&C always welcome

                        Thanks for the link, Gigalot.

It is quite long and will take me some time to digest it. Apparently they have series of thesis/papers on various aspects of it.

                        C&C always welcome
