Very interesting scene. Wonderful composition and great use of pastel hues. The golden ball shimmers. Interesting foreshortening and distortion, as if the viewer has fish eyes. I do think that even though she is underwater her flesh looks a bit lifeless. Just a touch of warmth in her face and hand on the right might give her more life.

Being born places you at a greater risk of dying later in life.

What they said above and I would add, a bit creepy. She’s dead. Drowned. Thus the skin tone. She pulls down the drowning. She offers a ball of gold but it’s fool’s gold. Very affecting.
