Both of these are smaller 12 x 16 oil and was experimenting. The first one is a scene from Naxos and I was trying to block in the shapes to create some atmosphere while not rendering every element of the painting. It looks better in person as the glare makes the sky look bad in the pic.
The second one is from a path not too far from where I live and the rocks are covered in moss and have blue and green shades that look fairly unrealistic and from another planet to be honest. Thus, my rocks look horrible and do not match the scene very well. I have a bunch of reference pics from this site and had thought about going back to do some plein air painting but not so sure any more. This painting didn’t give me much confidence to do so. I think I would have to invent some different colors to make this work.

We must leave our mark on this worldJuly 26, 2023 at 2:28 am #1520650Both are fine pieces, Wes. The second one possibly has a little too much attempt at detail, but I really like the first one. It has a great feel to it and is a good composition. If you wanted to try anything with it, maybe just soften some of the sharper foreground edges here and there. Otherwise, terrific, and I’d like to see more in this style. Well done!

July 26, 2023 at 5:27 am #1520656Great job on both of these Wes, the 1st one is more of a loose application from a brushwork perspective while the 2nd seems further worked/refined.
Both work beautifully and I really like the palette in both. You have portrayed wonderful depth in that 1st piece, while the 2nd plays light against shadow wonderfully.
I read what you said about the midground rock pile in that 2nd piece…I am not sure it adds to the painting and may be tempted to simplify things and just take it out, having that mid-ground area in shadow. The forefront rocks work for me and have good chroma and colour in my opinion.
I really like them both!! Nice my friend !!!

July 26, 2023 at 7:25 am #1520673I feel that they are both interesting and I like the boldness of the first. I would say that that boulder in the second is too big and those foreground rocks have too much blue in them. That would not be too hard to change, and the second is worth saving, given the work you put into it.
Everything else being equal, I would rather be in the painting zone.

July 29, 2023 at 6:23 pm #1521100Thanks Derek. I like the background in the second.
Thanks Gary. They both are 12 x 16 Oil.

August 4, 2023 at 11:06 am #1521722That first one is great – nice distance, good colors, and the abstraction works.
The second one isn’t bad per say, but some things are just really difficult to paint, such as rocks covered in weird moss and lichen. I think it’s good for what it is, but I’m not sure if there really is a way to make those green rocks look “as a rock should” given how they are covered in strange growth. It would work as a sci-fi painting, though – very alien.

Still much to paint and much to learn!
My blog: https://autumnglade.blogspot.com/August 6, 2023 at 8:47 pm #1521952Thanks so much Matthew! I agree with your comments. Green rocks are difficult to pull off. Frustrating as most of these areas in driving distance of my house are all covered in moss. I may try to experiment with changing the hue and color temperature to see if I can figure it out. I am sure it will take 100 attempts to do it well…

August 10, 2023 at 2:54 pm #1522292Both are beautiful in their individual style. While the first one catches the emotions with it’s loose brush work, the second is crafted very carefully and those trees seem to sparkle in the sunlight.
