I’ve been looking at the work of Charlie Hunter…..love it. He paints in monochrome with a wee bit of color added to a rich brown wipe-out foundation in Water Miscible oils.
I thought I would give it a try and it is a fun technique. I used a q-tip, rag, and color shaper for wipe out areas and used way more color than Hunter.
Now I have a Tractor Triptych:

We must leave our mark on this worldJune 2, 2018 at 2:44 pm #634051Spectacular, as usual. But I actually prefer the color rendition (that is, the finished part) in the step just above the finished work. The complete work is a bit greener than suits my taste; but I suppose those are the colors in nature.
Had to look up “color shaper.” Seems like a useful tool. I don’t do impasto, but from the Blick description (and your art) is seems just as useful for flat, thin layers.

June 2, 2018 at 3:42 pm #634045Awesome work Derek! I knew I’ve seen tractors from you before…
June 2, 2018 at 4:03 pm #634053Fantastic. My grandpa had a tractor looked just like that.

June 2, 2018 at 8:31 pm #634040I love tractors! and I love your tractors- you show them much respect.
I am the granddaughter of an apple farmer. Every holiday in the picking season my male cousins (who are the same age as me) were allowed to drive the tractor around the orchard. But not me! Still resentful! and it is still on my wish list to drive a tractor…bethany

Just an amateur artist trying to learn the noble art!June 2, 2018 at 10:53 pm #634049Great illustration of the well used machine. Your deft touch is apparent at every stage and a ‘triptych of tractors’ trips off the tongue!
This is essentially a glazing technique then? Do yo use a particular medium for the glaze?C&C always welcome.

June 3, 2018 at 12:12 pm #634043Terrific Derek! Equipment like this requires solid drawing, and you certainly have the skills. My grandfather had a great tractor- one of my favorite memories.

Comments or Critiques welcomed...always!June 3, 2018 at 12:24 pm #634058These are beautiful! This is an intriguing process you’re using; your colors are so full of life and worn out at the same time. Well done.
