So………still playing with rope/string and wanted to experiment. In this case I tied a series of knots in the rope and sort of “buffed” the paint in different directions to see what kind of marks I could get. Added some tipping & dripping. Isn’t done, but it is where I am so far. I do wish my arms were longer so I could have a larger range of motion

March 2, 2018 at 12:19 am #576839Haha, I now have a mental image of an artist with very long arms! This is looking really good. I must have a go at this technique sometime. I suspect that it is more difficult than it sounds…

Would you have enough control over your technique if you used tongs?
Nice piece. It must be impressive IRL at that size. The essential thing, for me, is to offer a visual expression of those things in our experience that words cannot express www.jim-whalen.artistwebsites.comMarch 2, 2018 at 8:21 am #576842With that size, that is surely going to be the statement piece of any room it hangs in!

March 2, 2018 at 12:53 pm #576841This is very nice. The irregular patches of colour create an interesting mosaic.
I love how you have areas of pure colour interwoven in this piece.

A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.
March 2, 2018 at 6:59 pm #576845Thanks very much Kay and graphicali. Still adjusting the color a bit, which is a challenge with this process.

Nice piece. It must be impressive IRL at that size.Thank you Jim. I have to vary the tension on the rope to ensure the knots make contact and I fear it would slip out with tongs. Though maybe light weight vise grips???? You’ve given me some ideas to ponder.

March 2, 2018 at 7:10 pm #576847Many thanks Chaya and Cliff. It does make a dominant statement, due to both color and size. Oh…….if only large surfaces were not so tempting, storage woes would be resolved .

Coming from you, that is a wonderful compliment Anthony. I was flipping it to work on a few sections and now can’t decide which orientation works best.
Any preferences?

Thanks Katie. That was definitely part of the challenge on this one. I’m making a few adjustments and will post an update soon. Regrettably, the California sun is hiding on this rainy day and every pic has either light glare or distorted color.

March 3, 2018 at 9:13 am #576840I like it. The blue gives it a cool visual vibe illustrative of the vibe a string might make when plucked. I prefer the original orientation.

What about tying or attaching the knotted string around a piece of lumber (a 1×2?) lengthwise. It could act as your “handle for manipulating the string, similar to a big a squeegee. I could imagine Gerhard Richter coming up with this technique. Is he an influence for you at all?
