Here’s a project I did today – I was out for about two hours. It’s acrylic on canvas. 10×12. I started with an underpainting of burnt sienna.

It has a lot of problems – some I think I know how to fix, others I do not.

I’ve been painting for about a year and a half…so be gentle…but what advice do you have for this unfinished work?

I’d like to go back and finish it on site. (Despite the bugs.)

Hi, All your lines are focused into distance which works fine, nice perspective, the tree on the right however is out of that line and being strong in colour and value drags the eyes away from the focus. If I block it out my eye travels smoothly along your lines of focus. I hope this makes sense , if you allow digital alterations I can post a cropped version of your painting.

Makes sense, yes. It’s what is there, so I will have to ponder this a bit

Are you going to use thicker paint application for the next layers?
I think you’ll like the effect with more paint & less thinning.

Think about color harmony & contrast going forward.
The far house might be white in life , but maybe a bit of color will show it off nicer in the painting..
Not sure about the right side ground /wall colors vs the left side grass & pavement colors, is the right side going to be grassy too or something else?

As mentioned the dark green tree is a bit too strong/dark and the dark green at far end of side walk also.. A soft light blue/gray or an opening of soft sunlight back there can keep viewers wanting to explore & wonder what is beyond..

                        Plein air..
One way is copy exactly what is there..to the best of our ability..
                        or
Be inspired by what you see, and use the scene as a base, but adjust things to make a better painting..

JMW – much of what you mention is on my mind to play with today. Thank you for the advice.

I deepened the colors, and brought some light into the trees. I still have a lot of work to do on the houses – they bug me – lines may not be straight enough?

With people – and a dog! – I think it’s looking better. I still work to do in some areas (like the sky and tree tops) but overall I’m pleased.

I left the tree on the right – it may distract, but I can’t bring myself to remove it!

Thomas, I really like it! Colors look realistic… I’d like to walk my mutt down that sidewalk any time.
