The house is set back from a very long rectangular lake which ive attempted to disguise with the view point and overhanging shrubs. For me this one was all about the fg reflections. After finishing it I waited a week before doing some touchups to the reflections, but I’m sill not entirely happy with them.
C&C Appreciated, Thanks for looking. Arnie
Oil/Impasto/Brush/Glaze on canvas board 16×12 inches.
Feb 22 Update: Got this one out to finish off so I can start my Hawkley oil. Reworked the shadows/reflections, brought the building slightly forward, and reworked the cloud reflection to what I originally envisaged – cant believe I posted my first attempt!

November 11, 2021 at 10:32 am #1445773Your impasto touches work so well in this, Arnie! They capture the sunlight and add some sparkle. Great job on keeping the house low key too; it’s there but it’s not screaming for attention. I wonder if the tree to the right of center could have a little more presence in its reflection because it’s so bright and textural? Maybe if the water surface were a little calmer there would be an opportunity to show off the reflections more. I don’t do much with water so please disregard if this doesn’t make sense! I love the deeper blue of the sky at the bottom of the painting!

November 12, 2021 at 5:42 am #1445888There is little color in your reflections and I like them as such. However, they do not work for me as the focal point of the painting. The green tree already mentioned and it relation to the red house are a color contrast that draws attention for me. I am not sure if this is what you want; but, it works for me. Gary

November 12, 2021 at 6:36 am #1445894Thanks Gary: yes the tree/house/colour contrast is the coi, perhaps a bit to much to the right, but then I liked the reflections from the dark trees so it had to be moved. I see the water/reflections setting the mood, the context for the coi. I used to always put a coi in one of the 4 intersects – trying to be a little more relaxed about that now!
thanks again

November 21, 2021 at 4:39 pm #1447176Great sense of distance off to the far-away house, and I like the sparkle on the water and the dark trees against the sky.

Still much to paint and much to learn!
My blog: https://autumnglade.blogspot.com/November 24, 2021 at 2:44 am #1447467Thanks Matthew – havent got round to fixing the reflections yet – but its still up on the easle!
November 24, 2021 at 7:18 am #1447487My goodness what a lovely sparkle to this Arnie. There is a real sense of movement in that water and I can see that the breeze is catching those trees. I would just go a wee bit darker in some areas of the red building for contrast ? In going for atmospheric perspective you may have “fogged out” the building a bit much. IMHO. Love the technique Arnie. Great painting.

February 17, 2022 at 3:34 pm #1458699Great job on the rework Arnie. I really like how you have refined the texture and the reflections are excellent. Another beautiful impressionistic piece to my eyes…
