I’ve just picked up my brushes a few months back and have been working with acrylic paint. I take my time and try to focus on being realistic with my subject matter. I use old photos of favorite memories. I play around with different backgrounds on some of my works and sometimes take iPhone snapshots to use as reference for the scenes. I’ll post an image from what I’ve done so far. It is acrylic on canvas.
I would like some overall suggestions on what I should do to make them  more realistic. I’ve gotten some good compliments from family and friends but you know how that goes. I need good honest feedback from my piers.

    thanks in advance.

it looks good to me. Perhaps less of the outlining on the fish tails.

        Nice job!

        A few quick things…

Watch your values in the background. The darks in the background are just as dark as the foreground, the background darks will be lighter than the dark of the hat. The light values in the background are too light (rocks/sunlit area).

Watch the hues in the skin. Cooler and warmer values. The shadows are likely cooler than you’ve portrayed in the photo of your painting. Glazing with a medium would help you adjust subtle changes.

Check the values in the fish, one is likely higher than the other. Also it’s unlikely every single rock on the boat ramp is the same color. Same goes for the crosswise concrete. Bottom of the coat is a solid color, unlikely because of reflect light being a different color.

        Just some quick thoughts.

        All the best,

        Mark

Painting was easy until I learned how.

Thank you, Mark. I appreciate your honesty. I’ll keep these comments to refer back to from here out. I know it’s not gonna happen overnight but I’ll keep after it.
        Thanks again for your help.
