Hey everyone – I haven’t been around for a month, but have definitely been painting. I quit one job because the firm was not living up to what was promised by the owner and 10 days later had a new job at a fantastic larger firm that I’m still getting adjusted to. That doesn’t mean I’ve stopped painting though! Here are the latest works.
Yellowstone, (2) 6×12 canvases in a diptych
I’ve been experimenting with a more graphic/abstract/minimal style lately and finished this one this afternoon. It’s based off an old slide scan I have from a trip back in 2004 (said slide scan is not good color-wise) so I had to fill in the gaps on color, but it feels like a vibrant piece that captures the spirit of Yellowstone.
Urbs in Horto, 9×12 canvas for a silent auction
This painting is a riff on the Urbs in Horto motto describing the master plan of Chicago using a base photo of an image I took while at Northerly Island looking towards the skyline during golden hour on a fall evening. I strived to capture the essence of the light and juxtaposition between man-made and natural (even though Northerly Island is completely man-made) hence the buildings here are only rendered as areas of color/shadow/light.
Norway Postcards, 30 4×6 canvas panels
I was inspired by a friend to do a minimalist series as he liked my paintings during the color blocking stage. I decided to do a series of small paintings based on places I’ve been during my trips to Norway, trying to capture mood, weather, etc… within a limited palette and detail. You can see the entire series here.[/URL]Hope you enjoy – feel free to give any comments and critiques deemed necessary, especially since I’m experimenting with a new technique.

I really like Urbs in Horto, the colors and the skyline are lovely.

Perhaps the tree running down the left side of the diptych seems out of scale.
A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.

July 10, 2018 at 9:56 am #655100I like the style and I like your paintings – I agree with Cliff about that tree on the left in #1 ……. maybe breaking up the reflection of the tree, even a little, by taking into it some of the other water and land reflection colours, would take away that cut-off feeling about it – it’s a big block!:)
Cheers, Maureen

July 14, 2018 at 11:57 am #655105Excellent work that is strong and appealing. Your Yellowstone painting reminds me of the Canadian Group of Seven, but with your own distinct style for sure. Urns in Horto is excellent, and really conveys a juxtaposition between the urban and the “natural” in the 21st century.

Cliff and Maureen, I certainly agree with you in the painting. With the source image I used, there was a highly foregrounded tree which was depicted. I should have taken more artistic liberty and shortened it.
Colin, this is the first I’ve heard of the Canadian Group of Seven but I do see the connections. The group of 7 I know is the Chicago Seven – seven postmodern architects that rebelled against Mies van der Rohe’s modernism (let’s not get into how ingrained Mies is in Chicago architecture…and how boring his buildings are).July 14, 2018 at 6:31 pm #655099I really like your style and great use of color
