I must attempt to create the likeness of soap suds in a watercolor illustration and am looking for suggestions. I’m guessing that masking fluid will be needed, but I would love to hear it if someone has a better technique. Thanks.

We must leave our mark on this worldJune 12, 2012 at 1:01 pm #1165528Many thanks for the links, Yorky. Char, this illustration has to do with giving a bath to a puppy dog, so all of the above.

[FONT=Calibri]Photography and Art WorkJune 12, 2012 at 2:51 pm #1165527Ok… I strongly recommend that you do a Google Image Search for “soap bubbles”… you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the results…
-
[*]for the bigger bubbles, you can treat them similar to dew drops…
[*]you’ll be able to see through them…
[*]they’ll have a good size highlight in the direction of your light source…
[*]they’ll have pink and blue areas due to the soap itself…
[*]you may even be able to see reflections of objects in the vicinity in the really big ones…Do a Google Image Search for “soap suds”… again, lots of images to provide some guidance and inspiration…
-
[*]for the sudsy bubbles, a variety of texturing techniques might give you what you need…
[*]spattering masking fluid
[*]a little salt
[*]be conscious of your light source, treating the bigger of the tiny suds bubbles like dew drops…Then… post your wonderful illustration for us to enjoy! Good luck with this, John!

June 12, 2012 at 3:46 pm #1165529Thanks for the help, Char, I really appreciate the suggestions. I’m sort of prevented from posting any of these illustrations due to an agreement with the author, at least for the time being. I should be able to if and when the book deal actually gets to print.

Here is a small section of the finished illustration (I can probably get away with this):wink2: . I decided to keep it simple and not to include the chancy stray bubbles and waterdrops. I might have added them and more color if this were a painting, and not an illustration. I just used the white of the paper, some Payne’s Grey, and a touch of Chinese White on some edges.

DIY art supplies, sketches, and more: cyntada.com / @cyntadaJune 16, 2012 at 6:41 pm #1165532I agree very much with CharM… You should treat the bubbles like snow, have the whitest part and have tints of pinks, blues, purples. Also, some shading as you may have with a drew drop. Have some larger ones, some smaller and more dense…no need to make separate bubble-like forms for the denser foam, but include some of those tints..Also, a tint of the dog’s colors, just a hint, nothing drastic, to look like there is a dog under all that foam and all those bubbles! It will take some creativity and some little practice pieces, but I’m sure you will be able to capture the look of the bubbles and foam…because, oh my, you captured the little puppy marvelously! Good luck!
