Here’s your weekend Daily.
On a walk yesterday, I spotted this rather nice ride. For those interested in buying one, I checked the MSRP – the 2019 BMW i8 coupe starts at just around $111,000 US; if you opt for the convertable, add $10,000.
[Nikon D7500 and Nikkor 18-300mm taken at 28mm, manual mode, 1/1600 sec, f/9, ISO 500, processed in ACR & PSCS5]And it would be out of character if I didn’t post a floral…
[Nikon D7500 and Nikkor 18-300mm shot at 260mm, manual mode, 1/1600 sec, f/9, ISO 500, processed in ACR & PSCS5]June 22, 2019 at 6:38 am #844619Wow Dave, you must live in a pretty flash neighbourhood with cars like that running about!
I might consider one of those when my Mazda6 bites the dust! And your signature floral is also no slouch either. :thumbsup:I spent 6 hrs on the phone to my son today. since he recently lashed out on buying his first camera, a Sony A7 Mkiii, two lenses, F1.4 85mm, F1.4 25mm,
against my advice to first go for something simple so as to learn all the basics before investing in such an advanced, expensive camera. Well, he did what he did,
and has been struggling with it ever since. Anyway, the great thing about it is that we now have a common interest that has brought us closer together, as for many years
our relationship has been a difficult one. Aside from that, the most exciting thing for me over the past 24hrs has been the release by Olympus of a firmware update for the
M1 Mkii that has put its focussing speed and IQ on a par with its recently launched, formidable M1-X flagship. I updated my camera with it this morning, and in the middle of our
marathon conversation (with phone hung around my neck!) I managed to test the upgrade on a flight of pigeons that I was able to capture in flight, all nicely sharp and in focus.
This was simply a single one shot grab, uncropped and unprocessed. Olympus OM-D M1 Mkii, 1/3200s, f/3.5, ISO 200, 90mm (FF=180mm )MY FLICKR

The camera kneads the dough, PP bakes the bread - GreenhillJune 22, 2019 at 12:24 pm #844612AnonymousMark, that’s a pretty impressive performance by both the updated camera and the photographer. This would be considered a fine image after processing; considering that it’s 100% unprocessed, it’s an amazing one.
No, I don’t live in the rich part of town – that’s a mile or so west, on the water. The homes there have garages larger than my entire house.
The BMW was just hanging out in the parking lot of a small local mall.
As you know, it’s Australia vs Norway today in the World Cup. Australia got off to a bad start against Italy (one of the surprise teams so far, IMO) but recovered with two wins. Norway entered the World Cup with a FIFA ranking of #12, vs Australia’s #6. But I understand that Australia lost a key defender just before the tournament began, and it’s the defense that needs to keep improving. Or maybe the strong offense, led by Sam Kerr, can overcome any defensive lapses. I’m predicting Australia to win, 4-2.
The other game today won’t be close: Germany (#2) hasn’t played as well as expected, but they’re still one of the best teams in the world. I’m happy for Nigeria (#38) advancing out of group play, but even though they’ve been overachieving, I don’t think they’ll have enough to beat Germany. I call it an easy win for Germany – maybe 4-0.
I’m off to the grocery to pick up a few final things for today’s dinner; I’ve been marinating boneless & skinless chicken breasts since last night and plan to cook them until 90% done with yellow potatoes and some sort of veggie in foil, then finish under the broiler for some browning. I’m making up the recipe as I go along, so it could be good or it could be a disaster.
Hi to those who visit later – hope you’re having a great weekend.
June 22, 2019 at 3:27 pm #844611Happy weekend guys
That shot is really impressive Mark, what was the f-stop?
Newer, lighter cameras are very tempting but I’ve too much
invested in Nikons to change now.Hi Dave, nice beemer but heck I could live for about four years
on that much money ~ unless of course if I changed all my
camera gear

June 22, 2019 at 7:59 pm #844617Hello all you lovely people and all your lovely photographs.
I spent the day at my daughter’s house working with her on her front yard, basically trimming bushes. She has so many shrubs, we worked from 11- 3 and the front was done. It looks so nice though, it was worth the back breaking labor.I love all the photos today.
Mark, sometimes the kids just won’t listen no matter how old they are. But hopefully he is as smart as you and will pick up things fast. If it brought the two of you closer, it was worth every penny. And none of the money came from your pocket. Maybe lay off the preaching about him spending too much money on a camera that is out of his league, if he had bought a point and shoot, he may have never called you. Does he have an eye for photography like yourself and Tina? The focus on the moving birds is incredible. Very impressive, Mark.
Carol,
I love dogwoods. I think they are one of the prettiest flowers. Somehow you always manage to find Magical lighting. And my theory is that the lighting is the thing that really separates the great from the good and the good from the mediocre.
This one is great.Dave,
How was dinner? Thanks for the update on the girl’s soccer. When is USA’s next game? I am excited about the NCAA men’s Baseball world series. It is down to the finals and University of Michigan will be playing for the championship starting Monday. It is the best of three games. How thrilling is that? Well, it is for a Michigander and probably a former Michigander like yourself. Thanks for starting the daily. It is funny how the shape, style, design of the 2019 BMW doesn’t turn my head as much as MOST of the vintage cars that I have shared here in WC, like the Hudson that I put in the thread in the Darkroom. If the two cars were driving down the street, I would have turned my head to see the Hudson, but the BMW doesn’t do anything for me. And it looks so much like other cars. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy your photograph, Dave. I do like the blue curled rear bumper thingy under the tail light, now that’s awesome.
I love the lily though, now that’s a beauty.
Time to relax and enjoy the rest of the day after a prosperous afternoon.
PS. Any new thoughts about bi monthly challenges should be PM-ed to me by tomorrow. I know that I won’t be up late tonight starting the new challenges. I feel like I could go to sleep right now if my head gets near a pillow.

Lorell, that Packard sure is a beauty. Your low-level perspective works great.
The dinner turned out OK.
The USA’s next game is vs Spain on Monday at 9:00 AM Pacific time, televised on FOX. And the second game is Sweden vs Canada at noon PST on FOX Sports-1 (the hispanic network Telemundo will show it here, so I’ll get to watch that one too).
I’ll be rooting for Michigan in the baseball world series, for 2 reasons: 1) as you mentioned, I’m a former Michigander, so I like to see them succeed; and 2) my dad was offered a baseball scholarship to U of M but turned it down to enlist in the Marines in WWII. He felt a connection to them the rest of his life, so Michigan winning it all – he would have been immensely proud of and happy for them.
June 23, 2019 at 2:36 am #844620Carol, your Dogwood blossom brings bag memories, its a long time since I’ve seen a dogwood tree.
The Packard is a ‘doozie’, Lorell. Do you know what year it is? My dad would often express his admiration tinged with a little envy whenever one drove by us, as he drove about town in his Essex Super6. That was in the 1930’s.
Lorell, my son is way smarter than me, especially in matters technical rather more so than artistic. Financially he could buy and sell me a dozen times over and not count the change.
Dave, I have to admit that I am not a follower of sport, nor did I ever engage in any. I did not know that Australia was in any World Cup event; in what sport was that?It sounds like you are quite a gastronome there, Dave! Now cooking is something we do have in common. I make a very mean pizza, also spaghetti bologna and lasagne. I even think Lorell would enjoy my cuisine!
Yes, since the firmware update, I’m calling the M1.2 my “new camera”. I took it along as usual on this morning’s walk along the breek where a Yellow Rosella was busy preening itself over breakfast.

The camera kneads the dough, PP bakes the bread - GreenhillJune 23, 2019 at 6:52 am #844615The yellow rosells shots are great Mark. Thes are a little less commmon than the rock pigeons.
The Packard is awesome and the BMW too. Not that I could afford either.Mark probably has experienced the tiny bush flies we get here.
June 23, 2019 at 10:36 am #844614AnonymousMark, nice captures of the Rosella, especially #2. I’m slowly learning to cook. I’m pretty good at some things, just learning at others, and remain hopeless at most.
It’s the Women’s World Cup of soccer that’s going on now.
MFI, nice capture of that tiny bush fly. Is it a nuisance, does it bite?
Not as sharp (or interesting) as the bird shots above is this one from yesterday – a common sparrow…
[Nikon D7500 + Nikkor 18-300mm at 300mm, manual mode, 1/1600 sec, f/6.3, ISO 500, ACR then PSCS5]Well, I got only one of 2 of yesterday’s WWC soccer games right: Germany easily beat Nigeria. Sadly, Australia lost on PKs (penalty kicks) after 120 minutes of playing time ending in a 1-1 tie. But IMO the ref missed two penalties by Norway – both should have been immediate PKs, and Australia would surely have made at least one of them.
Today’s games are England vs Cameroon (England should win easily, maybe 5-2) and France vs Brazil (France has done well but not as dominating as I expected and Brazil, once an elite team, has been a big disappointment; France is clearly the better team at this point, but Brazil is always dangerous: I’ll pick France to win, maybe 4-2.)
June 23, 2019 at 1:23 pm #844621Peter, that’s a very neat shot of “Loui”. You were quick to capture it.
The pigeons are owned by a local guy who releases them for a daily flight. They circle fairly tightly overhead as I practice BIF technique!Dave, Your sparrow is a tad soft, you did well to get a clear shot of it, they don’t stay put for long.
Thanks for filling me in on the women’s basketball. I’m not sure whether Peter follows sport or not, if so I haven’t seen him comment yet.MY FLICKR

FiFA World Cup Womens soccer. er, some call it football. I’m more of a cricket fan. I don’t mind watching the women’s soccer though. I feel the women are more honest about their sport. For Dave, the flies want your perspiration for the water and protein. They won’t leave you alone but they don’t bite.
