my new bird drawing in progress,
Pastelmat Board Sand colourFaber Castell & Pablos so far
own ref photo ( well actually taken by my husband)
This piece of Pastelmat is called “SAND” it’s like a Uart sanded paper in colour… looks like wet sand….
the texture on this colour is totally different to the Brown Pastelmat, I think its a bit finer… has taken me a bit to work out how to work it and that is to use the lightest feather touch of pencil and slowly build up your layers especially to start with, after a few layers the pressure can be a tad more … I have used mainly Faber Castell and Pablos so far with a white Derwent ColourSoft on the brightest whites only….I usually work the eye and beak 1st and once theyre acceptable move onto the head but this time I was finding it hard to work out the feather delineation/construction so decided to move to the tail it being so much clearer and easier…then decided to work backwards up the bird as those feathers werent all that clear either.
Oh also be very careful if using the lighter colours in Pastelmat as any marks for guide lines like your layout DON’T erase easily… I use my own made graphite sheet or a pastel pencil and sometimes a Colerase pencil so I suggest you test before going ahead on your final drawing just to be safe…
Hope this has helped those who are interesed in giving this surface a go…
2 more tips …
the board is hard to cut so now I have ordered a proper “Mat Cutter & Ruler”
also if like me you live in an area with very high humidity the standard Pastelmat curls a lot and although the board doesn’t have that extreme problem I have found it still curls a bit at the ends… I cut a 50×30 cm piece off a full sheet and its not easy keeping it taped too my orbital art easel…March 9, 2020 at 9:10 pm #958594Off to a beautiful start!
I find the combination of Pastelmat and colored pencil intimidating so appreciate reading tips and experiences of others!
Looking forward to seeing it develop!

March 10, 2020 at 3:57 am #958578Many thanks Mary, dont let the surface stop you because once youve come to terms with this surface you will love the versatility, I just go very slowly and test colours and which to layer 1st on the side . I rule off a small strip as my test area… am finding light 1st is working best on this “sand colour” then its one colour over another as I build up my mix to get the colour and tone I want…
Cheers Bren 😊😊March 10, 2020 at 12:54 pm #958576March 11, 2020 at 12:52 pm #958588Thanks for all of your notes on that… can’t erase, don’t know about ever trying that, yours is looking beautiful so far…

March 12, 2020 at 2:34 am #958579Thanks Robert
Karen now that Im getting more used to this surface its working far better and I have been able to lift a lot of my outlines… thought Id used colorerase but now know I picked up a verythin by mistake ! All the other light lines have lifted or are so light that the poly’s hide them easily, so not as bad as 1st thought….March 12, 2020 at 5:49 am #958591Looking forward to seeing this progressing. It’s interesting to read of the learning involved producing a new piece.
March 13, 2020 at 4:49 am #958592It’s very interesting to see the types of birds we don’t have in this country. Thanks for sharing your progress.

March 14, 2020 at 7:54 am #958581WIP 2 # still mainly Faber Castell and pablo pencils
Although slow going Im really starting to enjoy working on this surface which is quite versatile. Those feet have been quite difficult to work out and at the moment are far too dark at the edges but on this surface I will be able to tone them down easily. The other big plus for me is I can draw even with our high levels of humidity 😊😊
March 16, 2020 at 7:50 am #958589Looking fantastic, thanks for posting your in process pics, always fun

March 19, 2020 at 6:05 pm #958582Thanks Karen, I know I learn lots from those who post their experiences and so in my own small way I hope this helps others like me still learning 😊😊
March 19, 2020 at 6:11 pm #958583I am now calling this quits before I mess it up even more… had lots of problems with the look of the log and lack of impact between the pastelmats colour and the subject… resorted to panpastels for help there and had to be oh so careful I didnt smudge the bird colours into the background …. erasing isnt easy ….. hope it looks half decent
March 20, 2020 at 7:40 pm #958584tried to “Edit” and put this image in instead which is my last and final one.. Tweaked,Signed & photographed via my camera ….
March 21, 2020 at 2:34 pm #958595A beautiful work! I enjoy your color choices, the harmony and the warmth you created. Happy bird.;)
Thank you again for posting your progress and tips. You inspired a new adventure as I use Pastelmat with colored pencils for the first time.
It’s good to experiment!
