Welcome to Wetcanvas! You have certainly captured the intense gaze of the self portrait.
Sometimes knowing when to stop the painting process is the most challenging decision. Well done with this! Can’t wait to see your next portrait.

May 8, 2021 at 7:56 pm #1406556A “Self love Self portrait” for @dedkitty_studios (on Instagram) challenge called #ILoveMeMirror, the goal is to look into the mirror and tell yourself that you love you. This was a tough challenge for me because I have a lot of issues with my appearance and a lot of self hate but I am really trying to work through it. This is my 3rd ever self portrait I have completed and I am pretty proud of it. For probably ten years now I thought of myself like the hunchback, always dreaming of being attractive but just within the last few months I have let go of some of that. I am as I am. Don’t forget to love yourself out there kids. Let me know what you think.

May 13, 2021 at 10:17 pm #1408116This is a life-size self-portrait, done in pastels on a seven-foot sheet of butcher paper. It’s about 14 years old and done for a class. I laid down on the paper to mark the relative locations of body parts, then taped the paper to the wall and stood in front of it, looking onto a full-length mirror. My hands are hidden because they are holding pastels.

This is quite a project- don’t think I am brave enough to try this (nor do I have large enough paper!)

June 2, 2021 at 6:58 pm #1412923Well done, JJ! The whole paint application of the portrait looks direct and un-fussy, which I always attempt to get right. I like the intense look you have achieved. Was this from a mirror or photo?

Thank you for the encouraging words, Bethany. This was painted in a mirror.
July 25, 2021 at 12:22 pm #1424195I’ve posted selfies here several times. Here’s a recent one. 12 x 16 in acrylic, about 30 min sketch.
July 25, 2021 at 6:59 pm #1424279This is a wonderful self portrait! I like the strong brushwork and great dramatic colour shifts. Such a short time to get this result.

August 15, 2021 at 2:23 pm #1428314The paintings here are awesome, I feel so intimidated! I just want to jump in and participate a little bit, this is my best Sargent stare, and reference is my profile pic as I haven’t taken a selfie in a decade.

August 16, 2021 at 3:47 am #1428401Welcome to the self-portrait area! The place of the intense stare and vulnerable examination of your own face in the mirror (or photo). I have painted many self portraits- and I am never comfortable. But it is still a valuable painting to do.
This is a fine example of a self portrait- well done!

May 31, 2022 at 11:01 pm #1472403Wow, all your efforts are inspirational, I found my first drawing confronting and challenging. This is my first portrait drawing showing me on a ‘not so healthy day’.
