That’s much better, Nora- it balances out all the other colours on your face as well.
I didn’t use to think that backgrounds mattered much, but I am realising that they are necessary to interact with the face/figure to get accurate colour and value.
Great job!bethany

September 26, 2012 at 3:39 am #511273October 13, 2012 at 7:01 pm #510572Well, after not having drawn or painted anything in over two years I decided to get back into things. Unfortunately, I managed to lose what little skill I had to begin with…..LOL. After several hours, I had to walk away before I go nuts:
W/N Van Dyck Brown with lots of turpentine on canvas pad.
I’ll put it aside for now and come back to it tomorrow with fresh eyes and coffee[FONT=Courier]
October 15, 2012 at 8:24 pm #510350I don’t know if it’s a close likeness or not but looks to me like you’re very talented and know your way around a canvas with a brush sketch:clap: . Good job from my point of view.

October 24, 2012 at 2:44 am #510714Michael– great work here- mirror or photo? Love the monochrome.
Johan– this is really well done, too. The richness in colour you have achieved with the oils is remarkable. Same question- mirror or photo?

October 24, 2012 at 11:22 am #511403Beautiful and inspiring work all!
Thanks for the very kind words of encouragement. Bethanyt – Thank you so very much. I used a mirror. I’m struggling so much with coming to grips with the very slick surface along with very thin oil paint. I think I’m going to switch to grey scale pastel and paper until I can gain some confidence in drawing. It’s a constant and sometimes overwhelming frustration especially when I look at any master’s work. I have to keep reminding myself that the masters have spent years and years of drawing everyday. I look at works by Velasquez and Sargent and so admire the obvious confidence of brush work and mastery of color. But it is easy to take for granted the underlying skill in drawing. BTW, I’ve had to log in with a new account since I’ve tried innumerable times to log in with my original account for several days with no luck.October 25, 2012 at 3:38 am #510715Michael, you have summed up the main frustrations with drawing and painting portraits! I do my best to draw every day- that is the habit that helps the most with progress.

October 29, 2012 at 3:40 am #511386Thank you Bethany! This was done by photo but I intend to do a mirror self portrait any time soon.
October 30, 2012 at 5:38 pm #511278This thread inspired me to paint my first self-portrait…back in June. I’ve finally decided to put the paintbrush down & walk away, flaws and all. Next time I’ll use better lighting and sit a little farther from the mirror. If only my darn model would quit moving!
