This SP is wonderfully expressive! I think the quick painting can often be the surest and purest – I love it!LLeone
C&C welcomeMarch 25, 2012 at 4:20 pm #511349Hi Crafor, with regards the technique I used for the above self-portrait, I have outlined it with illustrations in my blog, under “Painting of Sophie’, and it’s probably better explained there than here, as the illustrations help.
But in that painting i missed out the umber layer which I used in the self portrait. (The glazing will follow soon in the Sophie painting.) Hope this helps a little, I know the blog post is by no means a thorough account, and so less than satisfactory, which I apologize for, but it will give an idea. Please click link below if interested and search for the Sophie/ verdaccio post. And thanks for your comments.
March 25, 2012 at 4:31 pm #511350March 25, 2012 at 7:25 pm #510820Beth I also just turned 50 but I refuse to admit it so dont tell anyone..
this is an old one from a drawing class focused on seeing, we did one before and one after.. this one actually looks like me,, the before was not worth keeping, so I have it hid in the bottom of a pile in a portfolio full of portraits.. no one would recognize it as me
March 26, 2012 at 1:49 am #510695Hi Deborah- I am always proud to tell my age (and then I say think of the alternative to getting older!?!)
But, it is confronting enough to stare at yourself- and then to get a convincing portrait from the encounter…!bethany

March 26, 2012 at 10:39 am #510821Beth, that is what I say.. alternative to getting older is not for me.. yet.. lol..
I think if I do another self portrait, I will wait till I have lines of distinction.. not just lines.
I did a charcoal portrait of my sister while on a trip, she was driving for hours so I had plenty of time to get all the details in.. I thought she was gonna strangle me when she got a look at it..I put in all the wrinkles and grooves, she thought I should have drawn her 20 years younger.. I believe it is one of the best ones I’ve done… we bickered and laughed the rest of our trip… I kept hearing mom in my head saying”dont make me stop this car!!” it was a great trip… lmao
March 27, 2012 at 5:26 am #510696Yes- but is she older or younger?! Thanks for sharing that great story! and I admire your dedication- drawing while in a moving vehicle!

March 29, 2012 at 9:56 pm #511317Wonderful! How do you get that texture of your skin like that?
CraforMarch 30, 2012 at 5:30 am #510577Beautiful work, Vic! I know it is a large canvas- it seems very smooth in the pic- what do you do to prepare the surface?

March 30, 2012 at 6:09 am #511039Thanks for the positive feedback everyone. I give the canvas a couple of extra coats of gesso, and sand it lightly, so it’s not particularly smooth. As for the general skin texture – I start with a burnt umber monochrome under-painting, then I glaze over a mid tone. The texture is achieved by a light over dark, and vice versa, pointilist approach, until it looks right.
