Not you Bethany (perish the thought) but humidity and bad light. Curse this temperate climate
Oh well fielded Clive. Just blame the loss of hair. It worked for Sampson. LOL.
Well really it’s a battle with the canvas isn’t it?

November 23, 2011 at 2:31 am #510301Hey all!
Beautiful work here! So many posts here since I was here last time.
I recently got glasses – never knew I missed out on so much detail to be seen everwhere! I sure hope my art will improve greatly just because of the glasses – it really should, hey?
Here is my SP with a lot of minor details added that I never even knew existed
I think it is complete, but am still eager to hear from you if you think I can improve on this in any way.
Regards

Yeah- I have — it doesn’t seem to help much. Reversed it in the computer also. But thanks!
November 24, 2011 at 12:13 pm #511296Hi
Well I’m new to Wet Canvas but was really pleased to find a thread where you could see peoples’ pictures. What a great site! I look forward to exploring some more and will certainly be back to this thread to see more self-portraits!
All the best,
HughDecember 2, 2011 at 11:50 am #511032Welcome Hugh!
Well, this portrait of myself in a beret was completely unplanned. Some of you know that I like to do quick sketches of people on the metro on the way to work here in DC. This morning, I sat in a seat that had a glass partition in front of me. I was doing a rather uninspired sketch of a passenger, and looking for another subject when a man in a dark coat walked onto the car and leaned against the other side of the glass. To my surprise, there was my reflection! I only had a couple of stations to take a shot at it, and there was no telling when the man might move. This is the result… I would say it took about 10 minutes. I’m not sure if people who know me would say that there is a likeness or not because it was done so quickly and it is a mirror image. But, it looks like what I see every morning before I’ve had my coffee!
Thanks for looking!
December 2, 2011 at 9:48 pm #510678Love it, Martin! The confident strokes make it a great quick sketch.

December 4, 2011 at 1:02 am #511320I am enjoying all of the self portraits. There are so many different approaches. I will post mine as soon as I am able.
December 7, 2011 at 12:09 pm #511297Hello again
Thanks for your welcome Martin! I really like the style of your self-portrait sketch on the train. It encouraged me to try to be more fluid with the approach I took with mine. I seem to be scowling more than usual. Maybe this is what I always look like when I’m drawing – funny, I’ve always thought drawing was very relaxing!
All the best,
Hugh
Oh – well I tried to stick my self-portrait in here but I’m told I need to have left two posts before I can insert an image so I’ll leave this and put it in another…December 7, 2011 at 12:14 pm #511298…and here I am again – a fully fledged two-posts-already member. And a mugshot of sorts to seal my membership..

December 7, 2011 at 2:13 pm #510309Excellent work Hugh!

My work on FacebookDecember 9, 2011 at 7:43 am #511299Thanks Martin and Snoball. I’m really enjoying getting back to drawing and now being able to stick something on the internet and get feedback on it from lots of other people doing the same thing is just fantastic! I find it very difficult showing my drawings to people generally. If I’m not happy with the drawing I tend to feel embarrassed about it and if I am happy with it I feel embarrassed about the fact that it looks like I’m asking for praise. Sensitive little thing that I am! But somehow being able to post them on a forum where everyone has the same agenda makes the whole process much more comfortable!
Very nice to meet you all and please don’t hold back on the criticism – that surely is the whole point! In fact personally I’m much more comfortable with constructive criticism than praise. Anyway – enough about me! – where do you all spend your time on WetCanvas when you’re not on this thread? Are there favourite places to go? Are there pages I MUST visit? Being a newbe I’d love someone to give me a few pointers and tell me what they like best about the site. Sorry to have waffled on for so long and I hope I’m not being too demanding! All the best,
HughDecember 9, 2011 at 7:49 am #510310Hugh, if you like drawing, there is the drawing and sketching forum, if oils, the oil painting forum and if portraits there is portraiture. I work in several mediums so I frequent several forums. If you just want to get to know people there is the cafe.
I felt much like you about looking for praise but this is a very friendly board and I think I have grown as an artist by posting my work and by reading the posts by others. You will learn by just viewing the work and critiques of others. Nice to have you aboard. :thumbs up:

My work on FacebookDecember 9, 2011 at 7:33 pm #510679Welcome, Hugh! This is a very accomplished work as an introduction! Your thoughts are similar to mine, as well- go and explore wc and I am sure you will find many wonderful things.
… and we all look a bit scowly when we do a self-portrait (I call it the concentrated look)bethany
