Nancy, I just started working with charcoal a few months ago. Have done maybe 30 portraits to this point. Don’t give it up. Here’s one of mine that is in the group shot above…

March 30, 2011 at 5:22 pm #511240THANK YOU, Jean!
Is yours from life, a mirror? I like the casualness of our posture, and expression – very much. I’d add eyelights and say voila!
Bobbie, good, sparkling lights! I confess to leaving out the age spots and wrinkles on mine, but, why the heck do I want to put all THAT mess back on me?!?

March 30, 2011 at 8:23 pm #510939I was happy to find charcoal sticks here, but they are rectangular, and I could only get each mark to be in an 1/8 of an inch proximity of where I was aiming.
March 30, 2011 at 10:15 pm #511103Jean : Looks great agree about highlights in eyes and maybe in your hair. I love the patten on your shirt. Good job.
Bobbie: Nice one. Might as well look good if you are going to do a SP!

March 31, 2011 at 7:07 am #510864It’s been really fun and insightful to peruse this whole thread. Self-portrait is such a personal thing, and all the different approaches and styles have yielded so many amazing results here. (I think artnlife‘s was my very favorite!)
It’s also fun to see how many of you have adopted your self-portraits as your avatars.
The thread made me interested to do my own, but I just don’t have the time right now. I just wanted to mention how amazing all y’all are. Keep rockin!

Thanks Sally! Yes, it’s from life, for the most part. I did take a pic of my hand and use it to get it right, though.
