I am fairly new to watercolor and still learning what subjects I enjoy painting and what materials I prefer using. Yesterday I was in an art store and they had Schut hot press paper 140 lbs, 22×30 in a pack of 5 for $10.00, so I picked up a pack. I haven’t been able to find any information on it online. I was wondering if anyone had any experience, thoughts or information on this paper. I enjoy reading everyone’s posts and learned so much from this site.

I’ve used this paper before (not the hot press, though), but not extensively. I seem to recall that it is rather soft, and lifts relatively easily (not as much as Fabriano, but more than Arches or Saunders). Not a bad paper, but not nearly as tough as Arches. 10 bucks for 5 sheets seems like a good deal. You should also note that hot press will be markedly different to paint on than cold press or rough.

Since you’re new to watercolor, I’d also recommend trying some Arches and Saunders to compare to the Schut. And try some different surfaces (cold press and rough), as well.

                Thank you for the reply.

I have used several student quality watercolor papers (Canson, Strathmore), 100% rag Bee paper, and have started using Arches cold press for most of my practice pieces.

I haven’t yet tried any hot press paper so thought I would buy it and at that price not be too afraid of wasting it. I just haven’t been able to find any info online about it and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it, or the best uses for it. From my limited experience with it, water/paint seems to sit on the surface longer than on the Arches CP.

I was in what I suspect is this same art store and got some of this same paper. I don’t yet know if I care for it, but that may be more due to the surface than the paper; I do like it better than Arches hot press. It’s VERY good for drawing on with pen & ink or colored pencil; I might try some ink & wash to see how that works out.

It doesn’t buckle as much as Arches or Stonehenge Aqua, that’s for sure.
