Hi, I haven’t posted in a while but that doesn’t mean I’ve forgotten this site or the people who have been here for years and helped me so much in my journey into the art world.
This piece is done on Pastelmat Board
drawn image area is A3,
pencils are a mix of my all time favourites Polychromus, Pablos and the odd Derwent lightfast/procolour.
Ref. photo is my own taken on one of my regular birding trips. Hope you like it ☺☺

Love the dark background, somehow it makes the portrait more intimate.

I am still to draw him but looking for that special pose to show him off at his best….
As to the background it was the most difficult part of the drawing, I wanted it to have a soft subdues bokah effect but also very dark to show the bird off . Took me ages and at one stage I didn’t think Id succeed as the pencils started giving me layering problems. I resorted to some OMS to break the pigment up and just kept at it.LOL
Thanks for stopping by and commenting JTP/MNR its very much appreciated.
April 12, 2022 at 2:30 pm #1466322Thank you, Brenda, for explaining. The background adds so much to your portrait. Sometimes a background comes together, more or less, for me and other times it is a struggle. Yours is perfect and she is a lovely bird. The male sounds like a terrific counterpoint!
It is wonderful to see glimpses of other parts of the world, both flora and fauna!
I apologize for being so slow to respond, but hubby and I were full time grandparents for awhile as dad was deployed. We loved every minute and every minute was a busy one!
If you celebrate Easter, may it be a joyful one.

May 2, 2022 at 4:12 pm #1468861Many thanks aphid, oh backgrounds, they are a real struggle for me. I’m now working on a white faced heron that’s standing in a shallow river full of water grasses and trying to make that look natural is killing me. I will post a progress image soon and hope that spurs me on to try and get it to work… this may turn out to be a “bin” one but I hate to be defeated so will try and make something out of it regardless….
