Happy May everyone! I hope you’re all off to a good start of the weekend and the month. It’s one of my favorite times of year, and soon it will be time to plant flowers and a garden. Which means I’d better get work done in my studio first! Highs in the 80s here today, yahoo!
Hi Kay. Oh, it’s such fun to see your cameraman at work. It must have been a fun experience. I once had a tiny featurette by a local TV broadcast at an art show, and they asked me (among others there) spontaneously if I would allow them to talk with me about my artwork. While it was a lot of fun, I was so nervous! I’ll bet you did a fantastic job with this, Kay! Oh, and I just laughed out loud at the sign on the doorknob about cats. Just hilarious!

May 3, 2021 at 1:32 pm #1405334Howdy Neighbors,
I took my darling wife and daughter to Pella, IA to see the Tulips May 1st. It was a nice drive there and back. The tulips were beautiful as always. I’m working on a painting of an Italian monistary turned motel for some friends as a gift. They went on a tour of Italy several years back and I told them to send me several photos to choose from and I would paint one for them. I’m struggling with it. I like landscapes with sunsets or rises, open fields, or even vineyards. I need to get it done and off my easel so I can move onto something else.
We got our garden all ready, and we have lettuce, beets, carrots, potatoes, and strawberries all coming up. Gotta get the other stuff in the ground now that the danger of frost is past. I’m still attacking honeysuckle bushes with my chain saw when the opportunity is available. They are starting to flower, and I really want the big ones all cut down before they go to seed. Several more hours of cutting to go, then I get to either dig up or spray the small ones to kill them. I would MUCH rather be painting.
I’ve been watching YouTube videos about people taking mini vans and converting them into a camper, then selling everything, or putting it in storage, and living in their van. WOW! What freedom that would bring. A few cooking supplies, some clothes, and your art equipment. Travel from one BLM (Not Black Lives Matter, but Bureau of Land Management ) or Federal Park, and paint to your hearts content. If ya needed to make a little money to buy gas or food, then paint where there’s people. Someone will come along and like what your painting. Show them several and make a sale. OKAY! I’ll admit it, I’m a dreamer… but if you don’t have a dream, what do you have? Of course you don’t have to sell everything. You could just go camping for a couple of weeks and do the same thing.
Later!

A Painter's QuestMay 4, 2021 at 8:53 am #1405558Hi everyone. A busy time. We are starting out with some rain. So badly needed for the drought expected for the summer. They haven’t been able to finish painting so we have our “porch” furniture in the house. I’m going to go out there and sketch anyway. I do have my chair out as of yesterday.
This is doctor followup week. Today is the only free day. We are doing well, just checkups.
We have music on zoom and baseball on TV. How unsatisfying. Plan a get together with our grown Texas kiddos for Sunday here. Restaurants are not good on Mothers Day. All buffets, yuck. So brisket, roasted veggies, and a NY cheesecake with pineapple topping. Hope you all have a good weekend … wow, I’m looking ahead, eh?
Take care….

Hi Donald. Those tulips sound beautiful! I’m glad you’ve gotten your garden started. I need to look at getting one going, too, but spring is cool this year. It seems to risk frost many nights yet, so even my dad hasn’t gotten corn planting started because he’s cautious of a frost. Certainly early enough in the year, so that helps! Feels later than it is for some reason. Wow, converting a minivan into a camper would make for an interesting lifestyle. Not sure I would want to do it long-term, but it would certainly be pretty liberating! And good for you to dream! I think dreams keep us going in so many ways. I look forward to seeing your painting for your friends – what a generous gift!
Hi Jo. I’m glad you’ve gotten some rain. We’re pretty dry here, too, but it’s been sprinkling this evening, so maybe we’ll get some rain too. Yeah, virtual shows, online meetings, and zoom calls aren’t much of a substitute, are they? It sounds like you have such a nice Mother’s Day planned. A tasty menu, too, which is always great! Love your May the Fourth photo of your granddog!
Not too much is new with me. I’ve started a new drawing, which I’ll be posting as a WIP here in the SW/W forum. It’s going to be a pen and ink drawing of 4 piglets from a Pixabay photo. I’m looking forward to this one! Have a great evening, all!

May 22, 2021 at 10:49 am #1410046Missing all the artists here, sigh……
The Scavenger Hunts have about 8 of us regulars left. A few come in and out. This software found my old avitar with the Bolivian painting and I can’t seem to change it back to my photo. Oh well. I did a quick sketch of a Kachina Doll for the Scavenger Hunts so it sort of fits here.
Various inks in the big sketchbook.
Hope you are all doing art and are fine. The fire was almost out!!

My website https://jocastilloart.comMay 22, 2021 at 2:43 pm #1410092Hi Jo. Thanks for stoking the fire and bringing it back! I love your sketch of the Kachina Doll. It’s got so much motion and movement, not to mention vibrant colors! I miss hearing from more of our art friends too. Been pretty quiet around here lately. Hope you’re doing well!
Hello to everyone lurking! Hope you’re all doing well and staying creative. Drop a line and say hello, if you’d like.

May 22, 2021 at 8:37 pm #1410128Busy, busy for me, so just checking in to see about this site. A major mess up on AMAE with the upload of images for the weekend event. The site would not take jpg anymore so one of the techs had to get involved…felt sorry for the host. Sure is nothing like our old one is it?
We are back in Alto, NM and were last here week before last, then Les had his first cataract surgery that went well. Next one is June 2nd. We were and still are under a tornado watch with a few violent storms this afternoon. It is not even their monsoon season yet. Very dry but had a good drenching earlier. Tomorrow we go home as we’ve been here since Tuesday. My friend who is watching the cats at home let Midge get out and she was a wreck over it. But she did manage to coax the cat back in later, not an easy task.
Your grand-dog is cute, Jo, wearing its costume. Are you going to the mountains this year?
Time to check on the load of towels in the new dryer. Not like my old Sears Kenmore where you control the drying time. This dryer is super smart but items are still wet when it stops. Oh well.
See you all later!

May 23, 2021 at 8:27 am #1410212Jenna, hi there and thanks. You stay so busy don’t know how you find time to be here. We love seeing you!
Kay, Our newish dryer seems slower as well, but the washer spins the clothes so dry that they don’t need that long. Hope yours gets it’s “brain” in gear and learns to stay on longer. It doesn’t look like we will be going to the mountains in New Mexico. We will see how the rentals look, they went up so much the year before last. And of course last year the governor of NM had such weird rules nothing was open.
Weather crazy. Beautiful mornings like real spring. Yesterday and today are just rainy enough that we can’t get out to do anything but not enough to catch water in the ponds. We did get wet about a week ago, started off in the clouds and got halfway around and it poured. Sat at the pavilion for a while and then back to the house. We were pretty wet .. but we are wash and wear so did OK. Nice to have rain. Bagels and coffee this morning.
Be heARTful everyone. Ta-ta!
