Reference photo copyright issues

Dear Maureen,

Hi….i am new here and still finding my way around things.

Just to clarify …. can reference photos be used for paintings that i may use for commercial purpose?

Say if i paint a watercolour painting based on a reference photo, then can i sell my painting commercially?

Do i need to contact the photographer?

Please do clarify

You can access the Reference Image Library by clicking Content Areas at the top of the page. You can use the images freely but not reproduce the photographs for sale.

You also may wish to check out the index of Watercolor Challenge Reference Images in the Watercolor Studio.

But i cannot sell the reference photograph.

Hello Latha, and welcome!

These images are all copyright free and may be used as a source for any artistic work EXCEPT reproducing the photo, as a photo, for any commercial gain.

Making a painting from one of the references and then selling the painting is perfectly acceptable!

I’m only sorry these references are no longer available in the enlarged and high resolution versions.

Good luck … and do share your work in whichever forum is most suitable so we can see what you’ve done!

You do not need to contact the photographer but it’s nice when credit is given. ?
