A little different piece for me, but there’s a landscape in there, so…
30 x 40, acrylic on canvas.
December 29, 2019 at 11:39 pm #925076Very interesting, a lot to find in there. Love your colour scheme. Beautifully painted.
December 30, 2019 at 7:59 am #925079Love your positioning of the birds to lead the eye around. The trees look great. Very intriguing painting, surreal.

December 30, 2019 at 9:11 am #925067Thank you Kiffin, yes, I wanted to create a story which is wide open to interpretation.
Thanks, David, I played around for days on where those crows should sit with tracing paper and Photoshop. This seemed like the best arrangement that would lead the eye to the ship, and from there to the rocks and maiden. Composition is everything, IMO.
Thank you, Bardo.
December 30, 2019 at 10:24 am #925072The design, color and drawing are all good. The rocks are so good that they almost steal the show for me. Gary
"Painting is a verb"
December 30, 2019 at 10:36 am #925068Thanks, Gary. The rocks are quite easy, actually. Just a matter of thick, brushy gesso to start with, then a dark wash and some sanding, hi-light, shadow, spatter and then add some tiny cracks. A bit more sanding afterwards. The underlying texture really does most of the work, a trick I learned from Rudy DeReyna’s books decades ago.
December 31, 2019 at 8:14 pm #925071Everything is great about this, but I really like the character in the trees and those wonderful rocks. The whole composition is fantastic, too – it begs to be the cover of a fantasy novel of some sort. Well done!

Still much to paint and much to learn!

Those squabbling crows have plenty to argue about it would seem.
Nice Work !Michael.

Me too !
But I’m also drawn to the mystery… why these things? What’s it about?WARNING: The universe changes its shape to reflect your expectation of reality.
@artBecks.floridaJanuary 2, 2020 at 9:59 am #925077As I have said before, I am a rock fan and these ones are stunning. Thanks for sharing your technique. Your comment about the book you used set me off on a search to find it and I did, and it is coming soon! It is a very old copy, but I look forward to receving it. I think your painting is wonderfully imaginative, and the fate of the Rossetti-esque girl, seems to me, to depend on the interpretation one puts on the symbolism of the crows. Excellent!

January 3, 2020 at 4:43 pm #925070Thanks so much Wes, Michael and Ginny!
Becks, thank you, the story is mostly about the berries. Did she have them and the crows stole one or did they bring them to her? Sleeping or worse?
Good for you, Bizz, I hope you enjoy the book, there are three different ones, not sure which one that was in, but hope you learn regardless. I sure did!
