I have an old tube of Winsor Newton Watercolor. It’s Davy Gray. Does anyone know what pigment or pigments they used to make it? I know I read about slate powder. I was also wondering when the tubes are from, are they really from the 20s-30’s? And the tube and cap, are they made of lead, metal, tin? A mix? Am a bit worried about it being toxic but I’m just keeping it for collecting. I read that the SL means select list of pigments that I guess are permanent. So would the pigment tubes without the SL mean they’re less toxic? Or this has no affect on toxicity?
It is indeed described as powdered slate, and yes, old tubes were made of lead.
