My wife and I are moving into a new “Horton” home in Princeton, Tx. The home is totally floored with wood laminate. One of the bed rooms will be my paintings studio. I’m exploring what surface I might use to protect the new floor from paint and various artist chemicals?
I use cardboard from heavy-duty cardboard boxes from Lowes or Home Depot. I know someone that laid down hardboard (formerly known as masonite) over the floors.
With cardboard, paint tends to sink in rather than lay on the surface, so you’re less likely to track it around. It’s recyclable too.
You can make a oil cloth tarp with any old canvas drop cloth from the hardware store and boiled linseed oil. Just thin the oil down 1:1 with mineral spirit, paint onto the canvas till saturated, and hang to dry for a day or two. Make sure you hang dry or the oil could spontaneously combust. The result is a fairly waterproof tarp. You can add beeswax/paraffin to the mix in a 1:1:2 part ratio. Example: 1lb wax, 8 fl.oz oil, 8 FL Oz spirit, but will need a old crockpot or double boiler and hotplate to melt the wax.
Did you manage to find a solution? Protecting your floor is definitely a smart move, but having good insurance coverage is just as important, if not more so. It provides peace of mind knowing that you’re covered in case anything goes wrong. I’ve been looking into different options myself, and checking out choice home warranty reviews could be a good step in making an informed decision. They seem to offer comprehensive plans, and hearing what others have to say might help you find the right coverage that suits your needs
