Hi everyone! I thought maybe some of you watercolorists may have had experience using tempera paints on glass. I’m having a problem with the paint cracking on a storefront window. This window faces east – and this time of the year we’re getting alot of temperature fluxes.(Another window I painted – facing south – was painted almost a year ago and has had no problems with peeling. Would anyone have a clue why this paint might be cracking and peeling off? I washed the window thoroughly first. Could it be the thickness of the paint? Also, it seems some colors (particularly those I mixed-for example red and green to get a brown)are more prone to this than others. Does anyone know the “rules” for painting on glass? I have a large project coming up with this stuff and don’t want to have all that work falling on the floor! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I don’t know if this will help, and its something I haven’t done in years (25), but in High School at pep rally time we used to paint with tempera on windows and we always added a little liquid soap to it. It gave the paint an easy to spread consistency and also was easier to take off when the time came. It still gave a very durable finish though. Try it on a small area and see what you think. I think it might bind the paint and keep it from cracking also.

I read somewhere that rubbing garlic on the glass helps.

I tried the liquid soap thing – so far the paint’s sticking good (it’s been on for about 8 hrs. now), and since the problematic areas peeled in a very short time period, I think this will do the trick. Thanks, Catjoe!

I haven’t tried the garlic yet, but I might if the soap gives up its hold. (Wonder what that will do for customer relations? Hmmm…)
            Thanks, Dennis!
