I have copied a painting by a living artist. I am not selling it or passing it off as an original by the artist (imagine being that good!). Can these be posted for critique or do they fall foul of copyright?

Give credit and you’re probably fine.
“a study of ‘artists name’, ‘title’ … bonus points to add a link to their site. extra bonus points if you contact the artist for permission to do the study (most people don’t bother with this when it’s for personal use/practice/satisfaction).

I agree with La. You’re free to post them for critique but I don’t know of how much value that would be. We would be judging your talent as a copiest rather than as an artist. Imo it would be more helpful to you if you posted original work.

Doing the copy for education and learning and posting for critique probably falls within the fair use guidelines. Be sure to credit the original artist.

Many in the oils forum post a study from a famous master. It is a good learning tool…..no problem. Just give credit to the original artist. Some pay Homage.
