If any of you have ideas about the best umbrella and/or where to buy it, I would appreciate the information.
My parents gave me money for my birthday — I told them I needed to buy a good umbrella (a larger one) — I am just using a small white umbrella with a bendable arm that I can clamp onto my french easel.
I have seen some advertised that have a coating under it — have any of you tried it?
Thanks for your input!
August 18, 2004 at 6:13 pm #1035269I recently purchased the Soleil umbrella from http://jerrysartarama.com
It’s quite large at over 50″ in diameter and seems sturdily built. When it’s not on sale it can be pretty pricey at over $60. I attach it to the top of my Jullian easel and it has worked fine.
http://www.utrecht.com and dickblick have cheaper umbrellas but I can’t tell you anything about the quality.

if you check out the cost cutter idea thread as a sticky in this forum, Marc H. downloaded an image of his umbrella and how it sticks to his set up.
I went and bought one…costing me a whopping $4.95 at Walmart near their garden center. That and a couple clamps similar to Marc’s.
I used it painting this past weekend in the plein air event and others came over impressed and asked where I got that wonderful umbrella? I told ’em $5 at Wally world…and their mouths dropped. Packs up fine, goes in my backpack next to my Guerrilla box.
I’ll find you a pic somewhere here of mine, but Marc shows how it is set up…

Marsha,
I bought one of these too but I found it to be cumbersome and far to heavy for my needs. I later bought a cheepo like Larry’s and it is fine.

http://www.blondheimartandstories.comAugust 19, 2004 at 9:39 am #1035270I just got the one that Dick Blick sells…it’s large and I do need to find some kind of spike to set it into the ground–when the ground isn’t completely soggy. It has a dark underside and silver on the top with the vents to keep it from sailing away too easily. It came with a bag that has a shoulder strap and it is not heavy at all–the other people I paint with have been trying to figure out how to get it away from me I think with shipping it was a little over $60. I’ve tried the smaller ones that clip on to the easel but I like to be completely shaded myself…oh, and I’m tall (5’9″)and can stand under it without hitting my head.

Kathyas a side note to this…I am just over 6′ tall…and that wooden dowel you see attached to my easel puts the umbrella up and over my head while standing.

Just another question for you Larry — does the color being dark instead of white have any effect on your canvas? Most of the ones I see are white — though I know I remember one with an undercoating that was grey — just can’t seem to find it now.
I will be going to Wally World today to check out what they have. Though the one at Dick Blick is not very expensive — around $39 with the vents at the top to let wind through. It comes with three attachments — a handle, a clamp and a ground stake.
August 19, 2004 at 10:06 am #1035268AnonymousSorry — another question!
I looked at the Blick site and they have three umbrellas — Kathy — which one is it you got? The Jullian one? I notice on the banner ad up above during one of my visits here, they show one that has a coating underneath, but I don’t see it on the web site! It looks completely different from the three they do show.
August 19, 2004 at 11:38 am #1035271It’s the Solartek one….I forgot to add that part of my price was tax since I live in PA and they have Blick stores here. I did see someone with a white umbrella and they told me that it was too light underneath it and to make sure I got a lined one…don’t know if that helps

www.kathybusillo.comAugust 19, 2004 at 4:51 pm #1035272Just bought a “Larry-Wally-World Plein Air” Umbrella! This works great, its lightweight, when its attached to a dowel rod it can be adjusted to any height. If you don’t like the black color you can always spray paint it white or gray on the inside. Thanks for the recommendation Larry!!

I haven’t found it a problem at all. Enough atmospheric light comes off the ground for an even lighting beneath the umbrella…and it is one shade. If the umbrella were transparent with bands of color (like a beach ball) I imagine it would be a problem letting light thru in various strengths.
