I have never tried it, but I am always planing on it. I just do day trips for now. The last time I went camping, I was a kid.
What did you find useful and what were your mistakes.

November 16, 2020 at 1:43 am #1355099Yes, Nagualero is a rough camper. It depends how far you want to go with it, I generally sketch plein air these days so I take my sketching kit and a chair/stick.

We must leave our mark on this worldNovember 27, 2020 at 6:11 am #1358377I have a travel watercolor kit that fits in a pocket of my camping pack. I used to take a lot more with me, but realized I was not painting as much as I thought I would, so a small sketch kit is plenty.

We must leave our mark on this worldNovember 28, 2020 at 8:25 pm #1358896This is my Winsor & Newton Cotman Water Colour Paint Travel Bag. I got this like 20 years ago I think. And my folding easel.
PS I cannot delete the third picture for some reason.

November 28, 2020 at 8:34 pm #1358899My old French easel. God this thing is heavy.
I have replaced it with a smaller and lighter guerrilla painter Box.I use water-soluble oils. I only use the water to clean up.

November 29, 2020 at 6:09 am #1358980I started with a little Cottman field box and 3.5×5″ pad that I could throw in my bike jersey. Then added to it.
Now I have a travel kit of 5-6 different and compatible water media that fits in a fanny pack with pads up to 6.5×9″, including the water bottle. Take this everywhere. To paint larger all I need do is bring along a larger pad of watercolor paper. No easel nor even a chair necessary in a pinch as I can sit or lean against anything if necessary.
My kit includes: transparent watercolor, watercolor pencils, gouache, ink pens, Inktense pencils, etc. I have room, if I want, to include small pastels or pastel pencils too. Could include Ceracolors (cold water soluble wax) if needed.
If you’re looking for comfy car camping to paint, you can pretty much bring a whole studio full of supplies. Only your car is your limit. There are so many really fun and inspiring videos on YT of people painting small to large while car camping, right up to that Aussie guy who paints truly large landscapes from his trailer studio. Go have fun and don’t worry about equipment.
BTW, camping these days from a vehicle can be really plush if you want it that way. If you’re going to backpack, that’s when the weight and size limits kick in, but with good equipment and some knowledge you can also be quite comfortable and go places you wouldn’t likely from a car setup.
September 22, 2022 at 5:24 pm #1486166Hi, I know camping looks very exciting, especially if it is for the first time, but you should be careful, that’s why I advise you to take the most necessary things. It would help if you had enough water, food, a tent, and warm clothes because the night is very cold. Also, don’t forget about the flashlight. I remember my first camping with friends; it was a nightmare because we forgot to take flashlights. Now we laugh at that situation, but I ordered a good flashlight from https://www.amazon.com/Vont-Flashlight-Flashlights-Water-Resistant-Accessories/dp/B089T8HDBV. A very good flashlight, which I always have with me when I go somewhere with my friends or on expeditions. Good luck and have fun.
