December 31, 2023 at 3:03 am #1536572That’s lovely Imelda and the b/g really supports the thrust of the flower.
Cheers, Maureen

https://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/topic/wip-still-life-with-purple-underpainting/January 1, 2024 at 6:09 pm #1536767Imelda, I just saw this. Lovely variation in “white’ colors and great BG.

C & C encouraged!January 1, 2024 at 6:20 pm #1536768This is an adenium, commonly known as a desert rose. It is very overworked and not bright and fresh as I would like. I am not sure how to approach flowers that all all the same color and try to get a variety of shades without them looking so different they do not belong on the same plant. It is a watercolor, 11 x 8, on a sample piece of New York Central 140HP. It lifted too easily to glaze, almost like cellulose paper, even though it is cotton. I know that is a characteristic of HP paper, but I have had Arches and it was much better. Where I had it taped to the board, it ripped a bit when the tape was removed. So I would not recommend it. At least I like my composition, as I cropped to get different shapes of negative space about the blooms. The colors do look more vibrant on the original.

C & C encouraged!January 1, 2024 at 6:34 pm #1536769Joy, looks lovely to me and not overworked at all. You’ve a nice variation in color with both pinks and greens. Not heard of that brand of paper. Hot press is a thrill to work on usually. Keep practicing. I used to be so terrified of florals I would not attempt them.
Here is the African violet 7×9 in Masters Touch sketchbook 80 lb paper using White Nights paints done last Wednesday. I put a snippet of the image on FB to see if anyone could guess what flower, and to my amazement one woman did and she used to be on WetCanvas. The winner gets the painting. So I’ll ship it to Dallas area.

January 2, 2024 at 10:12 am #1536821Sorry I’ve been a little absent. Busy time of year.
Lovely works so far. I really like the Adenium.
Still debating what to do for this. I gave up on the gouache because I was really unhappy with it. Couldn’t get it to behave how I wanted. Think I picked too complicated a subject as my first attempt at gouache. Think I’m going to do an orchid instead. Probably in soft pastel.
